Sweep over Hilltoppers gives Softball a share of the title

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SANANTONIO – The St. Mary's softball team knew the only real chance they had to win a share of the regular season title was if they took care of their own business at hand, and that they did, winning both games of the doubleheader against St. Edward's on the final day of the regular season, 7-2 and 8-0 in five innings. The Rattlers also got help with a split between Oklahoma Christian and Rogers State to win a share of the final regular season Heartland Conference crown and earn the right to host the Heartland Conference Tournament.

This is the 18th time since 2001 the Rattlers (30-23, 19-11 Heartland Conference) have either won a share or won the Heartland Conference regular season title outright. Only the 2002, 2005, 2010 and 2012 tournaments were not held in San Antonio and the Rattlers won the regular season in three of those years (2010).

Sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) went 4-for-6 with two three-run home runs over the doubleheader against the Hilltoppers, while freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin, Texas) was 4-for-7 with one run and one RBI. Fellow freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) also had three hits, scored three runs, had two RBIs and stole a base to aid the Rattlers. All 10 hitters who started in the starting lineup throughout the two games recorded at least one hit on the day.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Rattlers exploded for seven runs on 11 hits, while the defense held the Hilltoppers (15-25, 11-19 Heartland) to two runs on five hits and both teams committed one error.

Aldridge, Carney and junior Staci Johns (Elgin) all went 2-for-3 in the game at the plate. Carney drove in three runs, while Johns had two RBIs, while Licon had the other two. Senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) stole her 15th base of the season in the game, briefly tying her for the season lead with junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio).

Johns threw her 26th complete game in the circle to improve to 17-13 on the year. She gave up one earned run on five hits, walking two and striking out one on 112 pitches.

Olivia Burdick took the loss in the circle for the Hilltoppers to fall to 1-4. She lasted only 1/3 of a frame after giving up five runs on three hits with one walk. Mikayla Parker pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on eight hits, walking one and fanning four.

Aldridge drew a four pitch walk with one out in the first inning and Nash followed with a single up the middle. Johns singled up the middle to score Aldridge and place runners on the corners. Sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso) hit into a fielder's choice at third base, who ran Nash back to third and loaded the bags full of Rattlers. Licon singled back up the middle to score two more for the 3-0 lead and knocked Burdick out of the circle. Carney hit a three-run home run to double the score at 6-0.

St. Edward's scored one run in the top of the second, but the Rattlers immediately answered. With one out in the second, Aldridge singled over the shortstop's head and she was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Nash. Nash stole second and scored on a Johns single through the right side for the 7-1 score.

The Hilltoppers added one run in the fourth for the 7-2 final tally.

GAME TWO RECAP
Aldridge, Licon, Carney and sophomore Alex McLennan all recorded two hits as the Rattlers scored eight runs on 11 hits and McLennan threw a one-hit shutout to improve to 11-6 on the year. She walked two and struck out three in the five innings.

Keely Frazier took the loss for SEU after lasting 1 1/3 innings. She gave up two runs on three hits. The Hilltoppers also used Reagan Carter and Iliana Vara in the circle and both gave up three runs each.

In the top of the second, Johns singled down the left field line and senior Angie Camacho (New Braunfels, Texas) pinch ran for her. Moreno moved her to second base with a sacrifice bunt and Licon legged out an infield hit to second base. Licon stole second base and Camacho scurried home on the throw down to second for the first run of the game. Carney singled over the top of the shortstop's head and Licon scored from second, which signaled the end of the day for Frazier, trailing 2-0.

With two outs, Moreno drew a walk in the third and Licon singled, setting up Carney's second three-run homer of the day to give the Rattlers a 5-0 lead.

After a long at bat, Germain singled up the middle and stole second base. Aldridge followed with a single back to the pitcher, placing Rattlers on the corners. Nash reached on a fielder's choice where the shortstop tried to gun down Germain at home, but she was not in time, giving the Blue & Gold the 6-0 advantage.

McLennan singled to left center for her second hit of the game and freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) doubled on the right field line. Germain hit a sacrifice fly to left field for the 7-0 lead. Aldridge singled to centerfield to plate Christian and give the Rattlers the walk-off victory on Senior Day.

SENIOR GAMEDAY SCRIPT
St. Mary's softball would first like to recognize the St. Edward's senior class of 2019, which includes: Mikayla Parker, Lauren Garza, Kayla Appleby, Klarissa Garcia, Olivia Burdick, Shelby Janda and Keely Frazier.

First, from New Braunfels, Texas... Outfielder, Angie Camacho! Joining Angie today to celebrate her achievements are her father, Joaquin and mother Kaylynn Camacho. Angie became a Rattler as a junior, transferring from McLennan Community College. Angie says she chose St. Mary's for the wonderful opportunities and experiences that she knew she would have here. Angie contributed right away to the rattler program as she became the starting centerfielder the past two seasons. She leads the outfield with grace and poise. Angie is on course to graduate in the field of Exercise and sports science with the goal to continue her schooling to becoming a nurse.

HER TEAMMATE JULIA CRUZ WOULD LIKE TO SAY: "Angie! It's been nothing but laughs and smiles with you. From crying in Biomechanics to laughing at the most random things. You're such a hard worker and always living life to the fullest! Thank you for making the days better and brighter. Always in my heart and prayers!"

LET'S HEAR IT ONE MORE TIME FOR ANGIE CAMACHO!

Next from San Antonio, Texas, outfielder and third baseman, Raynelle Nash! Joining Raynelle today is her father, Mark, her mother Karen, her younger sister, Leasell and her older sister, Rochelle Fuentes. Raynelle has been a constant force all four years as a starter either in the outfield or at third base.  She has earned Heartland Conference Player of the Year Honors as well as D2CAA and NFCA All-Region second Team honors twice, CoSIDA Academic All-District, as well as being All-Conference Second Team in 2016 and First Team in 2017. Her skill and competitiveness has helped lead the Rattlers to become Heartland Conference Champions 3 of the 4 years so far and is battling to get her fourth.  She was the member of the South Central Regional championship team in 2016 where she was one of the lead contributors both offensively and defensively. Currently, Raynelle posts a 3.93 G-P-A in the field of Biochemistry with plans to continue on to become a Physician Assistant.

Her teammate Staci Johns would like to say: "Nash, you've been a constant leader and a friend these past three years. You used to scare me, until I realized I can just roast you right back. You've been a great teammate, an awesome workout babysitter to Taylor and me, and I appreciate you always being down to get breakfast from Bill Millers after workouts. I'm going to miss the Spongebob and Bobs Burgers references, but I know you're gonna do great things, and I look forward to our friendship after St. Mary's."

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, LET'S HEAR IT ONE MORE TIME FOR RAYNELLE NASH!

And last but certainly not least, from San Antonio, second baseman, Kristal Salinas! Joining Kristal today to celebrate her achievements is her father, Oscar and her mother, Abby. Kristal is also joined by her grandmother, Amalia Delgado. Kristal made an immediate impact to the Rattler program as well and has worked diligently to be the starter for the program all four seasons either at second base or most recently at shortstop. Her leadership by example has been a true measure of her success in the program. Her work ethic and drive helped lead the Rattlers to three Heartland Conference Championships and they are in search of their fourth today.  She, too, was the member of the South-Central Regional championship team in 2016 where she performed her skill at second base. Kristal finished her undergraduate degree of Exercise and Sports Science a year early and is now working on a Master's degree in educational leadership. She plans to continue her education to become an occupational therapist in the school setting.

Her teammate Taylor Germain said: "Kristal, you are the nicest and one of the most hardworking person I know. You are always willing to help me no matter what. You helped me so much these past three years on and off the field. You are an amazing friend and a great teammate. You always make me laugh in the infield and I love how competitive you are. You have always been someone I looked up to. You are also a beast when it comes to working out."

LET'S HEAR IT ONE MORE TIME FOR KRISTAL SALINAS!
