Softball drops first game of final series

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANTONIO – For the third-straight game, all the scoring for the St. Mary's softball team came in the first inning, but they were unable to hold on to the lead, dropping a 4-2 decision to rival St. Edward's on Friday evening.

The Rattlers are now 28-23 on the year and 17-11 in the Heartland Conference with just two games remaining on the schedule. The club now trails Oklahoma Christian in the standings, but can still host the league tournament with a pair of wins tomorrow and a split between Rogers State and the Eagles. Game one between the Hilltoppers and Rattlers is slated for Noon.

St. Mary's had three hits in the game, one each by freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin, Texas), freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas). San Antonio natives Taylor Germain and Raynelle Nash scored the runs for the Rattlers, while Nash and Licon each had an RBI.

The teams raised money and awareness during the game for childhood cancer, asking for donations of coins and online donations (www.acco.org/donate). St. Mary's fans could donate per strikeout, while St. Edward's fans could counter-donate per hit. The Rattlers hurlers fanned one on the evening, while the Toppers rallied for seven base knocks.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin) fell to 16-13 on the year after giving up three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. She walked two and had the strikeout. Sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin) worked 1 2/3 innings of relief where she gave up one run on two hits with two walks.

Julisa Ortega improved to 6-9 for SEU after surrendering one earned run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in seven innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Germain drew a walk to begin the game and with one out she stole second. Nash hit a fly ball out to centerfield and the ball was dropped, allowing Germain to score and Nash to get to second. Johns lined out to the shortstop, who overthrew second, so Nash scampered to third. Sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso) walked to put runners at the corners and Licon hit a slow ground ball on the infield where the third baseman chose to throw home, but it was not in time to get the speedy Nash at the plate, giving the Rattlers the 2-0 lead.

St. Edward's scored one run in the top of the fourth and took the lead on a two-run home run in the sixth. They added an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the 4-2 final tally.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Senior Raynelle Nash had her nine game hitting streak snapped during the game. It was the longest hitting streak of the year for any player on the team. She also had her reached base safely streak stopped at 10 games – and though she reached on an error – that doesn't count towards the streak.
  • Victoria Aldridge is now tied for the longest streak of the season of reaching base safely, having done so in the last 10 contests. Aldridge joins Taylor Germain and Raynelle Nash as players on the team having reached double figures in that category.
  • Alex McLennan batted for herself for the first time in over a month and hit the ball a long way, but the centerfielder was able to run down the ball in left-center to record the out. McLennan is still looking for her first hit of the season (0-for-12) but she does have an RBI.
  • Angie Camacho has recorded at least one out in 11-straight contests and has multiple putouts in five of those games. The three putouts she has ties for her second-longest streak of the yer.
  • Taylor Germain stole two bases to bring her season total to 15 swipes. It is the second time this year she's stolen two bases in a game and the first since the opening day of the season against Tarleton State.
  • Tiffany Licon has reached base in eight of nine games and has at least one hit in seven of those eight games.
TEAM NOTES
  • Hopes to host the final Heartland Conference tournament remain alive for the Rattlers. Oklahoma Christian defeated Rogers State 4-3 tonight, giving the Eagles the edge in the standings. However, if the Rattlers sweep the Hilltoppers in both games tomorrow and OC and RSU split, OC and StMU would tie and the Rattlers own the tiebreaker, giving the Rattlers the crown. Or, if the Rattlers sweep the Hilltoppers and RSU wins both, St. Mary's will be the outright champions of the league.
  • St. Mary's has scored more runs in the first inning than in any other inning this season, scoring 38 of its 206 runs this season in the first frame. The Rattlers are also out-scoring the opponents 38-12 in the first inning.
