Hurlers combine to shutout Houston-Victoria

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's baseball team completed the non-conference slate with a 4-0 shutout victory over Houston-Victoria on Tuesday evening, bringing its record to 26-18.

The Rattlers will close out the home portion of the regular season this weekend, hosting Oklahoma Christian for a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. followed by a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. The team then concludes with a three-game series at Lubbock Christian May 3-4.

In a pitch-by-committee contest, the Rattlers used five hurlers to complete the shutout win as senior Branson Hall (Lubbock, Texas), junior Matt Merrill (San Antonio), junior Levi Hon (Wylie, Texas) and junior Tyler Dick (San Antonio) all worked two scoreless innings and junior Johnny Panatex (Pflugerville, Texas) completed the game with the ninth inning for the team's third shutout of the season. Hall was credited with the win since it was known going into the game no pitcher would go five innings and he improved to 4-2 on the year.

Offensively, junior Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) continued to swing the hot bat, going 3-for-4 with a run scored to keep his reached base streak alive at 23 games. Junior Derek Mueller was the only other Rattler with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. The other four hits were distributed evenly amongst the hitters. Leadoff hitter Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) scored twice, while junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso) – playing over at third base – scored the team's other run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
McGowen walked to begin the game and moved to second on a passed ball. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso) singled to right center to put runners on the corners and on a called third strike to junior Keaton Milford (New Braunfels, Texas) for the first out Hernandez stole second. When the throw went down to second, McGowen was able to score from third for the first run of the game.

Fennell and sophomore Scott Short (Ingram, Texas) drew back-to-back walks to begin the second inning and the pair moved up on a ground out to the pitcher by freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas). Mueller singled between short and third to plate one run for the 2-0 advantage.

In the fifth inning, Mueller kicked things off with a single to right field. McGowen singled to third and Parrish moved them both up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt. Hernandez reached on a fielder's choice that got Mueller out at the plate, but Milford singled through the right side to score McGowen for the 3-0 lead.

The eighth began with a Perez single to left field and on a failed pickoff move, he was able to move all the way to third base. Junior Mitchell Caskey (Houston, Texas) hit a pinch hit single in the hole between short and third to score Perez for the 4-0 final score.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Junior Andrew Perez has now reached base at least once in each of the last 23 games – the longest streak on the team this season. Perez currently has a three-game hitting streak and has hits in 17 of the 23 games.
  • Jake Mares started his first game of the season at shortstop, while Patrick Fennell began just his second game of the year at third base tonight. Mares became the 12th player on the team this season to play multiple positions, while Scott Short is the first to play a third spot as he started tonight's game as the designated hitter. Short has played 24 games at first base, one behind the plate and one as the DH.
  • Head Coach Charlie Migl also played around with the batting order a little, moving Andrew Perez out of the two-hole and into the fifth spot in the lineup for just the fourth time all year. He responded by going 3-for-4. Perez has hit in seven different places in the order, while no one else on the team has hit in more than five places. Colton Parrish moved back up to the two spot for the 15th time this season after hitting primarily in the eighth spot the last month or so.
  • Mitchell Caskey's pinch hit in the eighth inning was just the team's fifth of the season. The team is hitting .182 in pinch hit opportunities this year, but Caskey has two of those hits, going 2-for-7 as a pinch hitter. Patrick Fennell has two of the others, going 2-for-5, while Ryan McGowen is 1-for-1.
  • Tonight was Branson Hall's second-straight victory in as many appearances. Hall also pitched two innings for a 'W' against Texas A&M International on April 11. Hall has recorded multiple strikeouts in each of his last five outings and now has 24 in 26 2/3 innings.
TEAM NOTES
  • The Rattlers have shutout three opponents this season and two of the last three games. Two of the three have been combined shutouts and Levi Hon is the only pitcher to have appeared in both games.
  • With the five stolen bases in the game, the Rattlers now have 77 swipes on the year, moving the team into fifth on the school's all-time single season charts, passing the 1998 team which recorded 75. The 1996 squad holds the record with 132 stolen bags.
  • The next base on balls drawn this season will be the 200th for the team. The Rattlers have been walked multiple times in each of the last eight games, showing patience at the plate.
