Pitchers shine during Baseball doubleheader

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – A three-hit shutout in game one and a run-rule in game two gave the St. Mary's baseball team a pair of victories over visiting Oklahoma Christian on Friday afternoon, 1-0 and 11-1.

With the two wins, the Rattlers push their winning streak to three games and improve to 28-18 overall and 8-9 in Heartland Conference play, while the Eagles move to 27-17 on the season and 9-8 in Heartland action. The Rattlers are sitting in fifth place in the standings with four games to play. The Eagles are right ahead of the Rattlers in the standings in fourth, while UAFS holds a two-game lead at 10-7 in third. The Blue & Gold finish the regular season at league-leading Lubbock Christian May 3-4.

The pitching staff has buckled down as of late, giving up just one run in the last three games and shutting out opponents in three of the last five games. Junior Mason Minister (San Antonio) has two of those shutouts, including the one on Friday against the Eagles, while the game two victory went to junior Zach De La Garza (San Antonio).

Senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader at the plate, scoring two runs, while freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) was 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI.

GAME ONE RECAP
Minister pitched his second-straight shutout, improving to 6-0 on the season after giving up just three hits over the seven innings. He walked only one and tied his season high with seven strikeouts.

McGowen drove home Mares in the bottom of the seventh for the lone run in the game to give the Rattlers their fourth shutout victory of the year and their third in the last four games.

GAME TWO RECAP
De La Garza continued the team's hot streak on the mound, giving up one run on seven hits, walking four and striking out nine on 107 pitches to improve to 7-5 on the year.

At the plate, Vela went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Mares was 2-for-2 and another two runs scored. Senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) was also 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI in the nightcap as eight of the nine spots in the order tallied at least one hit and six of the nine had an RBI.

After being retired in order in the first inning, the Rattlers batted around in the second frame. Junior Keaton Milford (New Braunfels, Texas) got things started with a single to right field. Sophomore Scott Short (Ingram, Texas) sacrificed him to second and Vela singled through the right side to put runners on the corners. Parrish laid down a great bunt and everyone was safe for the first run of the game. Mares singled up the middle and got to second on an error by the centerfielder. Vela scored on the single for the 2-0 score. Junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) walked, as did freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio), which pushed across Parrish and knocked out the Eagles starting pitcher. Junior Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) doubled down the left field line to score two more and lift the Rattlers to the 5-0 lead.

Oklahoma Christian scored in the top of the fourth on a solo home run, but the Rattlers immediately answered in their half of the frame.  McGowen singled up the middle and Perez singled to right. With one out, Milford reached on a fielder's choice that erased Perez off the base paths, but the shortstop overthrew first, allowing McGowen to score for the 6-1 tally.

Parrish began the fifth with a single through the right side and Mares bunted him to second. Mueller reached on an error by the shortstop to put runners on the corners and McGowen put down the successful sacrifice bunt to score Parrish for the 7-1 score.

Vela singled up the middle to kick off the seventh inning and Parrish singled to left center. Mares bunted for a single to load the bases and a passed ball brought home another run. Mueller singled and the Eagles again went to their bullpen. McGowen was hit by a pitch and then erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Perez. Hernandez also hit into a fielder's choice, but an error by the third baseman allowed Mueller to score to give the Rattlers four runs with just one out and the 11-1 final score.
