Long ball does in Softball against third-ranked Javelinas

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – Despite a strong pitching performance from sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin, Texas), the St. Mary's softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against third-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday night in the final non-conference games of the season, 6-2 and 2-1.

The Javelinas (38-8) are also the top-ranked team in the South Central Region and are fighting for the top spot in Lonestar Conference and the right to host that conference tournament, while the Rattlers (28-22) are looking to host the final Heartland Conference Tournament and are currently ranked eighth in the Region.

The Rattlers close out the regular season with a three-game series against rival St. Edward's on Friday and Saturday, hosting a single game on Friday at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at Noon. The Heartland Conference Tournament will begin on Thursday, May 2 at the site of the regular season champion.

Junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) and freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) each had four hits over the doubleheader, while sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso, Texas) tallied three as the Blue & Gold notched 18 hits in the twinbill.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Rattlers outhit the Javelinas 11-10 and fall to just 25-4 on the year when tallying more base knocks than the opponent in 2019. Christian went 3-for-3 with three singles and a few long at bats, while Germain and Moreno both had a pair of hits to help pace the Blue & Gold. Sophomore Victoria Aldridge (Elgin, Texas) and senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) scored the pair of runs at the top of the lineup and Moreno had the RBI.

As per usual, junior Staci Johns (Elgin) pitched the complete game one for the Rattlers, throwing her 25th of the year. She surrendered six runs on 10 hits, walking one and striking out one on 103 pitches.

Saidi Castillo improved to 21-4 for the Javelinas after pitching the first 5 2/3 innings. She didn't allow an earned run on nine hits, walking two and fanning three. Breanna Smith threw the final 1 1/3 frames and gave up two hits for her third save of the year.

Kingsville scored one run in the top of the first, but the Rattlers immediately answered. With one out, Aldridge singled back to the pitcher, who overthrew first and allowed Aldridge to move to second. Nash followed with a single to centerfield to put runners on the corners. Johns hit into a fielder's choice, but the first baseman threw wide to home plate, allowing Aldridge to score and Nash to get to third. Moreno hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Nash and give the Rattlers the 2-1 lead.

The Javelinas scored one in the second and three in the third – all via the home run – to regain the lead at 5-2. After Johns gave up the three-run shot in the third, she retired 10 straight, until Makenzie Mays singled with two outs in the sixth. TAMUK tacked on one in the seventh for the 6-2 final.

GAME TWO RECAP
Once again, the Rattlers outhit the Javelinas, this time, 7-to-5, but lost the game 2-1. The Rattlers left seven runners on base and had at least one runner on in each inning, but couldn't capitalize.

Germain had two of the team's hits out of the leadoff position, while the other five hits were scattered throughout the lineup. Nash scored the run and had the RBI with her fourth home run of the year in the first inning.

Sophomore Alex McLennan fell to 10-6 but pitched a great game. She allowed two earned runs on five hits without a walk and struck out three on just 82 pitches.

Smith, who earned a save in game one, came back to pitch a complete game in the second contest. She gave up the one run on seven hits with two walks and four strike outs to improve to 14-3 overall for TAMUK.

Nash hit a solo home run over the left field fence with two outs in the bottom of the first inning for the early 1-0 advantage.

The Javelinas took the lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run by Roxy Chapa for the 2-1 score.

McLennan buckled down and retired the last 11 batters she faced in the contest.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Raynelle Nash has tied for the longest reached base streak of the season on the team at 10 games – and she has hit safely in the last nine – which is also the longest streak on the team in 2019.
  • Victoria Aldridge has the second-longest active streak of reaching base at nine consecutive games, which is now the third-longest this year on the club.
  • Nash now has four home runs on the season to lead the team and it was the 17th home run of her career.
TEAM NOTES
  • In Heartland Conference play today, Oklahoma Christian and Newman split a doubleheader, putting the Eagles and the Rattlers in a deadlock for first place in the standings at 17-10, while Rogers State is one game back at 16-11. The Eagles and Hillcats play a three-game set at Rogers State over the weekend.
  • St. Mary's is guaranteed one of the top four spots in the Heartland Conference Tournament that begins May 2 at the site of the regular season champion and has already earned a spot at the Championship that takes the top five teams in the league.
  • The Rattlers are now 25-5 this season when out-hitting the opponent in the game, as they did so in both games of the doubleheader.
