Crooked numbers abound in lopsided win for Baseball

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – An offensive explosion and a combined four-hitter on the defensive side led to a lopsided victory for the St. Mary's baseball team on Tuesday evening as the Rattlers defeated Our Lady of the Lake 25-1 at Dickson Stadium to earn the season sweep over the Saints.

Both senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) and junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso, Texas) recorded five RBIs each in the win as the Rattlers improved to 22-12 on the year. Parrish was 2-for-2 before being relieved behind the plate, while Hernandez was 4-for-5. Eight of the nine starters had at least one hit and one RBI and all nine reached base at least twice. Junior designated hitter Patrick Fennell (El Paso) was also 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs.

Senior Branson Hall (Lubbock, Texas) improved to 2-2 on the year after pitching a solid three innings to begin the game. He allowed just one run on three hits, walking one and striking out three. The other four relievers pitched one inning each, giving up one hit with two walks and three strike outs.

The Rattlers will be at Rogers State beginning on Friday with a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m. with the seven-inning contest. They will conclude on Saturday at noon. They will return home the following Thursday to host Texas A&M International for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Mary's scored 25 runs on 20 hits with three Saints errors, while Our Lady of the Lake scored one run on four hits with no Rattler miscues. The Rattlers plated five runs in the first, five in the second, 11 in the third and two each in the fourth and sixth for the lopsided win.

With two outs in the first, Hernandez singled between short and third to kick off the rally. Fennell followed with a double to center to score Hernandez. Senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) and sophomore Scott Short (Ingram, Texas) walked to load the bases and freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) was hit by a pitch to score Fennell. Parrish hit a long double to right center to clear the bases and give the Rattlers the early 5-0 advantage.

The Saints got one run back in the top of the second. Freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) singled to left center to begin the Rattlers half of the frame, junior Andrew Perez (El Paso) followed with a single to center and Hernandez hit a single to left to again load the bags. Fennell hit a hot shot to third for the fourth single of the inning to stretch the lead back to five, 6-1. Vela hit into a double play, but scored Perez for the 7-1 lead. An error on a high chopper off the bat of Short plated one more and Parrish hit his second long double – this one to left -- to score two more to give the Rattlers five runs for the second-straight frame.

Perez walked to begin the third and Hernandez crushed his sixth home run of the year. Fennell kept things rolling with a single to left, Vela singled to right and Short singled through the right side to load the bases for the third straight inning. Mares hit into a fielder's choice that scored Fennell, but erased Short off the base path. With five RBIs already in the game, Parrish didn't see a pitch anywhere near the zone and walked on four straight pitches to put Rattlers on every base again. Junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) singled back up the middle to plate one and McGowen beat out the throw on a grounder to third to score one more. Perez tripled to left center to clear the bases and give the Rattlers 18 runs for the game and force the Saints to the bullpen for the third time. Hernandez singled to center to continue the rally and score Perez for the 19th run of the contest and Fennell followed it up with a bloop single to left. Short tripled to left center to extend the lead to 21-1.

Junior Tyler Dick (San Antonio) retired the side in order and got the offense right back to work. Freshman Shawn Tober (San Antonio) was hit by a pitch and McGowen singled down the right field line. With one out, Hernandez reached on an error by the second baseman to score Tober. McGowen scored on a wild pitch for the 23-1 advantage.

Neither team scored in the fourth frame. Tober walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth, but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of McGowen. The Saints tried to turn the double play, but threw the ball into the Rattlers dugout, allowing McGowen to move to second. He scored on the triple by Junior Steven Wynn (San Antonio), who in turn scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Hernandez for the 25-1 score.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Colton Parrish became the fifth player this season to have five or more RBIs in a game, doing so in the first two innings.
