Minister shuts out Hilltoppers; Baseball splits Thursday at St. Ed's

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN, Texas – A stellar pitching performance by freshman Mason Minister helped the St. Mary's baseball team earn a split on the road in a doubleheader at St. Edward's on Thursday afternoon as he won game two 1-0 after the Rattlers dropped the opening game 4-2.

The Blue & Gold are now 25-17 on the year and 6-8 in Heartland Conference action, while the Hilltoppers are 18-24 overall and 5-9 in league play. The Rattlers are currently tied for fifth place in the Heartland standings and are ½ game out of fourth place with the top four advancing to the conference tournament.

Freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) went 4-for-7 with a stolen base, walk and run scored over the twinbill and freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) was 3-for-6 with an RBI on the day.

The Battle of the Saints series concludes Saturday at 1 p.m. and the Rattlers return home to host Houston-Victoria on Tuesday, April 23 at 6 p.m. in the final non-conference game of the year.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Rattlers scored their two runs on six hits with three St. Edward's errors, while the Hilltoppers scored four runs on nine hits with one StMU miscue.

McGowen was 2-for-4, while the other four hits were scattered amongst four players and McGowen and junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) each scored a run. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso, Texas) had the club's lone RBI in the opener.

Junior Zach De La Garza (San Antonio) pitched the complete game, surrendering four runs on nine hits, walking four and fanning four to fall to 6-5 on the year.

Ryan Hill threw 6 2/3 innings allowing one earned run on six hits, walking two and striking out four and Jayson Flores got his third save of the year retiring the only batter he faced.

St. Edward's broke onto the scoreboard first, plating three runs in the bottom of the second on three hits and a Rattler error.

St. Mary's answered with a pair in the third. Mueller walked and McGowen singled up the middle, then hustled to second when the ball went to third. Hernandez grounded out to the shortstop, but scored Mueller. Junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso) – the Heartland Conference Player of the Week -- reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to score McGowen and bring the score to 3-2.

The Hilltoppers added one more in the fifth for the 4-2 final score.

GAME TWO RECAP
Minister stayed undefeated with a two-hit shutout. He walked two and struck out five to move to 5-0 on the year and win his second-straight start.
McGowen, Mares and junior Andrew Perez (El Paso) each had two hits in the nightcap, totaling six of the team's nine hits and senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) scored the lone run in the game, while Mares had the club's lone RBI.

St. Mary's scored its run in the second inning and held it throughout the contest. Junior Keaton Milford (New Braunfels, Texas) walked and was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Mario Vela (Mission, Texas). Vela moved to second on a wild pitch and Mares singled to left field to score Vela.
