Errors prove costly for Baseball in rubber match at St. Ed's

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN, Texas – A season-high five errors proved costly in the St. Mary's 7-0 loss at rival St. Edward's on Friday afternoon as the Hilltoppers won the rubber match between the squads to take the series, 2-1.

The Rattlers (25-18) were shut out for just the second time this season as they've alternated wins and losses over their last seven contests. The Rattlers and Hilltoppers (19-24) sit in a tie in the Heartland Conference standings with identical 6-9 records with five games remaining. StMU has a three-game set with Oklahoma Christian and a doubleheader with Lubbock Christian remaining, but steps out of league play one more time first before the final push, hosting Houston-Victoria on Tuesday night, April 23 at 6 p.m.

In the final Battle of the Saints contest, seniors Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) and Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) both recorded two hits and Parrish hit one of the only two extra base hits in the game, doubling down the right field line in the seventh inning. Juniors Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) and Keaton Milford (New Braunfels, Texas) each had a single for the other two hits for the six Rattler hits in the game. St. Edward's scored its seven runs on seven hits with the benefit of the five StMU miscues.

Sophomore Jacob Koehler (New Braunfels) pitched the first six innings, giving up two earned runs on six hits. He walked three and struck out four to even his season record at 2-2. Junior Johnny Panatex (Pflugerville, Texas) was on the hill for the next 2/3 of an inning, where he surrendered two unearned runs on no hits. Senior Oscar Sepulveda closed out the game, pitching the final 1 1/3 frames, allowing one run on one hit, walking two and striking out two.

Nathan Medrano improved to 2-4 for the Hilltoppers after pitching seven innings and the Rattlers got five hits off him. He also walked one and struck out four. Ben Moralez threw the final two innings, giving up one hit, walking one and fanning two.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Andrew Perez has now reached base safely in the last 22 games, while Derek Mueller's streak of reaching safely was snapped at 18 consecutive.
  • Mario Vela has the team's longest current active hitting streak at seven games. He has scored a run in five of those contests. Vela's batting average is back over .300 for the first time since March 22 and now stands at .301.
  • Keaton Milford became the 11th Rattler this season to play a second position as he was the designated hitter in today's lineup.
  • After recording at least one putout in 10 straight games and in 21 of 22 contests, Andrew Perez did not record an out in right field in the last two games against St. Edward's as the Hilltoppers stayed away from that area of the park.
  • Colton Parrish's errors were the first for the senior catcher in 24 starts.
  • This was the first start for Jacob Koehler where he didn't allow any extra base hits and pitched more than one inning. Koehler also has multiple strikeouts in each of his last five appearances.

TEAM NOTES
  • Friday marked just the second time in 2019 the Rattlers have been shut out in a game. The other time was a 2-0 to UAFS on March 29 in seven innings.
  • With the stolen base in game three, the Rattlers now have 72 steals on the season, tying for the seventh-most in school history with the 1993 team. The single season record at St. Mary's is 132 swipes by the 1996 squad. One more steal will knot the 2001 team for sixth on the all-time charts, while two more will tie the 1998 club for fifth with 75 steals.
  • The stolen base percentage of 82.8% would also rank fifth on the list if the season ended today (72-for-87). The 1996 team owns that record as well with an 84.6% (132-for-156).
