Softball wins series from Eagles after day's wait

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

OKLAHOMA CITY – After a one-day delay due to inclement weather, the entire team got involved on offense as all nine St. Mary's players got at least one hit in the 11-6 softball victory over Oklahoma Christian to give the Rattlers the series win on Sunday afternoon.

The Rattlers improve to 27-19 overall and 16-9 in Heartland Conference play with the win, while the Eagles fall to 29-11 on the year and 13-8 in league action. St. Mary's is now in second place in the Heartland Conference standings, ½ game back of Rogers State with five games to play, while the Hillcats have seven remaining and the Eagles still have nine left.

Freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) was the only player on the team with two hits, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while the other eight players in the starting lineup all had one hit. Junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio), freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin, Texas) and senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) each scored twice and sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso, Texas) had a game-high three RBIs.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin) pitched her fifth-straight complete game to move to 16-10 on the year, allowing six runs on nine hits, walking four and striking out one.

The Rattlers host Texas A&M International in a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 2 p.m. at The Park at StMU before stepping out of Heartland play for the final time in 2019 to host Texas A&M Kingsville on Tuesday, April 23 in a doubleheader at 5 p.m. The team concludes the regular season welcoming St. Edward's to town for a three-game series on April 26-27.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Germain started the game with a four-pitch walk and was successfully bunted to second by Aldridge. Nash followed with a walk and S. Johns reached on a fielding error by the second baseman to load the bases. On the first pitch, Moreno was hit to score the first run and freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) hit into a fielder's choice to plate Nash for the 2-0 lead.

Oklahoma Christian cut the lead in half with one run in the third on two hits for the 2-1 score.

In the fourth with one out, freshman Jayme Johns (Elgin) singled to centerfield. Christian followed with a single to center. With two outs, Aldridge walked to load the bases and Nash walked for the first run of the inning. S. Johns singled down the left field line to score two more so the scoreboard read 5-1.

The Eagles answered with three runs on three hits in their half of the fourth for the 5-4 tally.

Nash took the first pitch she saw back to the pitcher for a single with one out in the sixth. With two outs, Moreno doubled to center to score Nash. Licon singled to left and scurried to second as the throw came into third. Carney knocked a single out to centerfield to plate both and send the Eagles to the bullpen with the Rattlers up 8-4.

Oklahoma Christian once again answered, scoring two runs on three hits with one StMU error to cut the Rattlers lead in half, 8-6. The Eagles made several changes to their defense, including bringing starter Madison Hagood back into the circle.

The Rattlers took advantage, as Christian singled to right field and promptly stole second. Germain singled to the pitcher and Aldridge hit a bunt single back to the pitcher, where Christian scored on a fielding error by the first baseman. Nash reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Germain to score. With one out and runners on second and third, Moreno grounded out to the short stop, scoring Aldridge for the 11-6 final.

Hagood pitched 2 1/3 innings in the loss to move to 13-6. She gave up three earned runs on three hits, walking three and striking out two. Kali Crandall threw 4 1/3 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts and Lindsey Stoeckel pitched 1/3 of a frame without recording an out.
