Baseball run rules Dust Devils to win series

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's junior Mason Minister pitched a gem of a game to lead the Rattlers baseball team to a run-rule victory over Texas A&M International 11-1 in eight innings.

The victory gives the Rattlers (24-16, 5-7 Heartland Conference) a 6-1 season series win over the Dust Devils (14-24, 5-7 Heartland).

Minister, from San Antonio, gave up a double with two outs in the first inning and then retired 12 straight Dust Devils before they got their second hit of the day. TAMIU managed just five hits off Minister, who improves to 3-0 on the season. He also struck out five and didn't walk any in his second start of the year.

The Rattlers scored 11 runs on 12 hits and both teams committed one error. Both junior Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) and junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) tied for the team lead with three RBIs, while Perez had a game-high three hits as he was 3-for-4. Mueller, junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso) and senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) all had two hits and junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso), freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) and Mueller each scored twice in the lopsided win.

The Rattlers head to St. Edward's for a three-game set beginning on Wednesday for two games starting at 1:30 p.m. and concludes on Thursday at 1 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both Perez and Hernandez singled back up the middle with one out in the first inning and after a nine-pitch at bat Fennell hit a line drive through the hole between the shortstop and third baseman to score the first run of the game. With two outs, sophomore Scott Short (Ingram, Texas) walked to load the bases and all three moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch for the 2-0 lead.

With one out in the second, Mueller walked, stole second and moved to third on a groundout by freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio). Perez singled to left to score the third run of the contest.

The Rattlers batted around in the fifth inning. Hernandez walked with one out and scored on a double to left center by Fennell. Vela singled past a diving shortstop to plate Fennell and signaled the end of the day of Solis. Fennell advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt and scored on a single to left center by Short. Short scurried to second on a passed ball and Mares walked. Both came home on a double down the left field line off the bat of Mueller, which ended Pena's day. McGowen walked and both he and Mueller scored on a double down the right field line by Perez for the 10-0 advantage.

The Dust Devils broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the seventh with one run on two hits and a wild pitch to ruin the shutout.
Mares kicked off the eighth with a single to short, beating out the throw to first. He stole his second bag of the game and scored the final run when Mueller doubled to right center.
