Softball earns another split

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas – A strong day at the plate led the St. Mary's softball team to a split at Lubbock Christian, dropping game one 3-2 before bouncing back to win game two 6-4 on Friday afternoon.

The Rattlers (15-10, 5-3 Heartland Conference) hit .365 as a team in the doubleheader, led by sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso, Texas) and junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) who each went 4-for-6 on the day with a double. Germain also scored a pair of runs and drew a walk. Senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) and sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) both had three hits on the afternoon and Nash scored a run, while freshman Aracelli Sanchez (San Antonio) scored two runs while pinch running.

The Rattlers and Lady Chaps (12-6, 3-3 Heartland) conclude the series tomorrow at Noon. The team then heads to Angelo State for a rematch against the Rambelles on Wednesday before returning to the Park at StMU to host Rogers State on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Rattlers comeback rally in the seventh inning fell just short, as the team plated two but trailed by three going into the frame. St. Mary's out-hit LCU 11-to-5 in the game but stranded nine runners on base.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) pitched the complete game for the Rattlers, falling to 8-6 on the season. She allowed only two earned runs on five hits, walking three and striking out four.

The Lady Chaps used a pair of pitchers in the game as Taylor Franco pitched 6 1/3 innings in the win, allowing two runs on 11 hits with no walks and five strikeouts to improve to 5-3, while Jordan Wehr picked up her second save after 2/3 of an inning of work. She retired both batters she faced.
Carney went 3-for-4 and Germain went 2-for-3 offensively for the Rattlers, while Nash and Sanchez scored the two runs and freshman Bari Sanchez (San Antonio) and Johns had the RBIs.

Lubbock Christian scored two runs in the first and added one in the second to take the 3-0 lead. In the top of the seventh, Moreno singled through the right side to lead off and Sanchez pinch ran. Freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin) grounded out to the pitcher, but advanced Sanchez to second base. Nash singled to centerfield and Christian singled past the short stop to score the first run. Johns singled up the middle to plate the second run, but the pitching change ended the Rattlers threat and the game ended 3-2.

GAME TWO RECAP
Sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin, Texas) won her second-straight start and improved to 5-1 on the year after allowing just one earned run (four total) on six hits in 4 2/3 innings of work in game two as the Rattlers won 6-4. Junior Julia Cruz (Asherton, Texas) picked up the save, pitching the final 2 1/3 innings in the circle without allowing a hit. She walked two and struck out four for her first save of the season.

The Rattlers scored six runs on 12 hits and committed two errors in the game, while the Lady Chaps scored four runs on six hits. The Blue & Gold left six runners on base, while LCU stranded nine in the nightcap and StMU turned a pair of double plays on defense.

Amber Carlton pitched four innings for LCU, giving up five runs on seven hits. She didn't walk any and struck out two. Wehr threw the final three frames, allowing one run on five hits with one walk and one strike out.

Moreno went 3-for-3 in the contest, while Germain and senior Kristal Salinas (San Antonio) were both 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Nash went 2-for-4 and both Moreno and senior Angie Camacho (New Braunfels, Texas) had two RBIs.

St. Mary's jumped on the scoreboard first, plating two in the second. Germain doubled down the right field line to kick things off and she advanced to third on a passed ball. Salinas singled past the short stop to score Germain. Salinas moved up a base on a ground out and advanced to third when Moreno singled to left. Camacho grounded out to first, but plated Salinas for the 2-0 lead.

With one out in the fourth, Salinas singled up the middle, sophomore Juliana Cerda (San Antonio) followed with a single to right and Moreno singled to right to score Salinas. Freshman Mikayla Briggs (San Antonio) was brought in to run for Moreno and Sanchez pinch ran for Cerda. Briggs promptly stole second and Sanchez scored on a ground out by Camacho. Briggs scampered home on a wild pitch for the 5-0 advantage.

The Lady Chaps got three runs back in the bottom of the fourth and one in the fifth to close within one, 5-4, but the Rattlers added one in the sixth. Germain led off with a single to second and Salinas sacrifice bunted her over to second. She moved to third on a groundout by Cerda and scored on a double to left off the bat of Moreno for the 6-4 final tally.
