Softball sees another thriller go extra innings

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LUBBOCK, Texas – It was another thrilling ending between the St. Mary's Rattlers and Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps on the diamond on Saturday afternoon, but unfortunately the ending didn't favor the Rattlers, as the host Lady Chaps came away with the 9-8 extra inning victory to win the series 2-to-1.

Both schools had big third innings with the Rattlers (15-11, 5-4 Heartland Conference) scoring four, while the Chaps (13-6, 4-3 Heartland) plated five to tie the score and it was tied at 8-8 after seven complete. LCU scored one in the bottom of the eighth after StMU threatened in the top half of the frame.

Senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) and junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) each scored twice, while sophomore Juliana Cerda (San Antonio) recorded two RBIs and Nash, freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio), senior Kristal Salinas (San Antonio) and Cerda all had two hits each in the game. The middle five in the lineup all drew one walk as well.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) started in the circle and pitched four innings for the Rattlers. She allowed three earned runs on six hits, walking three and striking out one. Sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin, Texas) took over and pitched the next 2 2/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits, walking three and fanning two. Junior Julia Cruz (Asherton, Texas) fell to 2-4 on the year after working the final 1/3 of a frame in the loss. She gave up one run on two hits with a walk.

Jordan Wehr earned the win for the Lady Chaps to move to 5-2 on the season. She threw the final six innings, surrendering four earned runs on eight hits with five walks and two strike outs.

Both teams had 11 hits in the game, while LCU committed two errors, compared to one by the Rattlers.

The Rattlers head to Angelo State for a rematch with the Rambelles on Wednesday in a doubleheader. The teams split earlier this year with StMU winning game one 2-1, before Angelo State came back to win game two 6-1. The Blue & Gold then return home to host Rogers State on Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
As they often do, the Rattlers struck first, scoring one in the top of the first inning. Nash reached first base on a fielding error by the second baseman and she moved to second on a single to right by Christian. With one out, sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) reached on a fielder's choice, moving Nash to third and the pair pulled off a double steal of second and home, respectively.

In the third, Nash again led off, this time singling through the right side. Christian singled up the middle and freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin) singled to first base to load the bases. Carney drew a walk to plate Nash and Germain hit into a fielder's choice where the Lady Chaps got the lead runner out at home. Salinas singled to third base to score Aldridge and Cerda singled through the right side to score two Rattlers and give the team a 5-0 lead.
Lubbock Christian tied the score with five runs in the bottom of the third inning and took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Rattlers offense wasn't finished as it answered the challenge with three runs in the top  of the fifth. With two outs, Germain and Salinas walked. Cerda hit a ball to the short stop, who fumbled it, allowing Germain to score. Sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso) doubled to left field.

The Lady Chaps tied the score in the sixth and won the game in the bottom of the eighth. There were two runners on base and no outs when the game ended.
