Softball splits at Texas A&M Kingsville

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

KINGSVILLE, Texas – After dropping the first game 6-2, the St. Mary's softball team came back to win the second game of the doubleheader against Texas A&M-Kingsville 5-3 in 10 innings, earning a split against the future conference foe on Tuesday evening.

The Rattlers (14-9) scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning and held on when the Javelinas (20-3) pushed one across in the bottom of the frame.

Freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) went 5-for-9 over the twinbill with two runs scored, while junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) was 3-for-5 with an RBI and senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) was 3-for-9 and scored three runs. Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) scored twice and had an RBI and junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) also had two RBIs.

Both Johns and sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin, Texas) pitched complete games for the Rattlers. Johns took the loss in game one, while McLennan threw the win in game two.

The Rattlers remain on the road, playing a three-game Heartland Conference series at Lubbock Christian Friday and Saturday and a doubleheader at Angelo State on Wednesday before finally returning home to host Rogers State on March 16 and 17.

GAME ONE RECAP
Nash and Christian both went 2-for-4 at the top of the lineup with leadoff hitter Nash scoring both of the team's runs. Sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) and senior Kristal Salinas (San Antonio) each had an RBI.

StMU scored two runs on six hits, while Texas A&M Kingsville scored six runs on eight hits and committed three errors.

Johns pitched the entire six innings, moving to 7-5 on the year. She walked two and struck out three with 88 pitches thrown.

The Javelinas starting pitcher, Saidi Castillo improved to 12-1 after allowing one earned run on seven hits, walking two and striking out four.
St. Mary's scored one run in the top of the first for the early lead. Nash singled up the middle on a full count. With one out, Johns helped her own cause with a single to left field and with two outs, Salinas singled to score Nash.

In the fifth inning, Nash reached on an error by the short stop and moved to second on a single to left by Christian. Johns sacrificed them both up one base with a bunt and Carney hit a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Rattlers the 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Javelinas scored six runs on six hits for the win.

GAME TWO RECAP
Once again, the top of the lineup did the majority of the damage, as Christian went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in the two spot, while Johns was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the three-hole and Licon scored twice with an RBI either running or hitting for Johns.

McLennan pitched all 10 innings for the Rattlers, the second time she's gone the distance in her career in an extra inning game – as she pitched all 12 innings against the Javelinas last April 17. McLennan allowed two earned runs on eight hits, walking two and tying her season high with seven strikeouts to improve to 4-1 on the year.

St. Mary's scored five runs on nine hits and committed one error, while the Javelinas scored three runs on eight hits with four miscues. The Blue & Gold were also aggressive on the base paths as Nash, Christian, freshman Aracelli Sanchez (San Antonio) and Germain all had a stolen base in the game.

Breanna Smith threw the whole game in the circle for TAMUK, allowing three earned runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out six.
There was no scoring until the fifth inning, when the Javelinas pushed one across in the bottom half.

St. Mary's answered with two in the top of the sixth to take the 2-1 lead. With one out, Christian singled through the right side and promptly stole second base. Johns singled to score Christian and Licon came in to run for Johns. Carney reached on an error by the first baseman and Licon moved to third. Germain reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Licon to score.

The Javelinas tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh and the score remained that way until the top of the 10th.

Nash was placed on second. Christian singled via the bunt, placing runners on the corners and Licon singled to third to plate Nash. Carney walked to load the bases and Germain hit a first pitch rope to left field to score Christian. With one out, sophomore Juliana Cerda (San Antonio) grounded out to third to score Licon for the 5-2 advantage. TAMUK managed one run in the bottom of the 10th, but the Rattlers ended the threat for the 5-3 win.
