Softball sweeps DH from rival St. Edward's

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

AUSTIN, Texas – The St. Mary's softball team swept a midweek doubleheader from rival St. Edward's 2-1 in nine innings and 6-0 in the nightcap.
The wins give the Rattlers a four-game winning streak and improve their record to 21-15 overall and 11-6 in Heartland Conference, while the Hilltoppers move to 8-15 on the year and 5-11 in the league.

Freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) went 3-for-5 with an RBI, run scored, stolen base and a walk in the doubleheader, while fellow freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) was 4-for-7 with two runs scored, a stolen base and a walk. Sophomore Alex Moreno (San Antonio) led the team with two RBIs and both junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) and senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) were a perfect 2-for-2 in stolen bases.

Both pitchers threw complete games, as junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) won game one and sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin, Texas) won game two for the Rattlers.

St. Mary's has a full week off from competition; next playing Tuesday at Tarleton State in a non-conference doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
Eight of the nine spots in the order recorded at least one hit in the first game as the Rattlers scored their 2 runs on 11 hits. The bottom third of the order -- Germain, freshman Jayme Johns (Elgin) and Licon – each recorded two base knocks.  J. Johns and Licon also had the two RBIs in the game, while Germain and freshman Aracelli Sanchez (San Antonio) scored the run while pinch running for Moreno.

S. Johns pitched all nine frames for the Rattlers, giving up one run on five hits, walking two and striking out four to improve to 12-8 on the season. It is her 17th complete game of the year in her 23rd appearance.

The Rattlers got on the board first, scoring one run in the top of the second. Moreno led off with a single up the middle and Sanchez pinch ran for her. Freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin) singled on a bunt to the catcher. Germain flied out to the right fielder, but Sanchez was able to move to third on an error by the first baseman on the play and she scored on a Licon single to right field with two outs.

St. Ed's tied the score in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run to lead off the inning.

In the top of the ninth with one out, Germain singled to left center and stole second base. J. Johns singled to center and Germain scored on the play for the 2-1 winning tally.

GAME TWO RECAP
McLennan pitched a complete game shutout, leading the Rattlers to a 6-0 win in the nightcap. She gave up just four hits with one walk and one strikeout to improve to 7-3 on the season and win her second-straight outing.

The Rattlers scored their six runs on eight hits with two Hilltoppers errors. Iliana Vara fell to 2-2 after pitching the first 1 1/3 innings. She surrendered three runs on four hits, walking one and striking out one. Reagan Carter pitched the final 5 2/3 frames, also giving up three runs on four hits. She walked three.

Nash got things going right away with a double to left center to begin the first inning. Christian took the first pitch she saw to second base for a single to put runners on the corners and the pair successfully pulled off the double steal for the first run of the game. With two outs, Moreno singled to right center to plate Christian for the 2-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Germain singled to right and Licon received a four-pitch walk. Camacho grounded out to the catcher, but knocked Vara out of the game. Nash flew out to center, advancing Germain to third. Once again the Rattlers pulled off the double steal, with Germain swiping home for the 3-0 advantage.

There was no scoring until the fifth when the Rattlers again pushed two across. Christian led things off with a single up the middle. S. Johns followed with a single to left center and Sanchez pinch ran for her. Carney sacrifice bunted the two up a bag and Moreno reached on a fielding error by the left fielder on a sacrifice fly to score Christian. A fielder's choice off the bat of Aldridge back to the pitcher went awry and Moreno scored on a throwing error by the catcher for the 5-0 lead.

Licon led off the sixth with a single between the third baseman and the short stop and Camacho moved her to second base with a sacrifice bunt. Nash walked and Christian singled between third and shortstop to load the bases. S. Johns hit a deep fly to centerfield to score Licon and give the Rattlers the sixth and final run of the contest.
