Migl wins 1,200th game; Baseball defeats Saints 8-2

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – It's not often you get to see a head coach tally 1,200 career victories, but the 216 in attendance at Dickson Stadium witnessed a piece of history Tuesday evening as St. Mary's baseball coach Charlie Migl reached that milestone with the team's 8-2 win over Our Lady of the Lake.
Migl is the active leader in wins amongst Division II baseball coaches, eighth among active coaches regardless of division and he's now 34th in wins on the all-time list (with a minimum of 10 years as a NCAA coach).

The 8-2 win for the Rattlers gives them their 20th of the year, improving them to 20-10, while the Saints fall to 18-16. It is the 37th straight season the Rattlers have reached the 20-win plateau.

The Rattlers return to the diamond on Friday when they host Arkansas-Fort Smith in a Heartland Conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. at Dickson Stadium. The teams conclude the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Saints and Rattlers will face off again next Tuesday at 4 p.m. on the St. Mary's campus.

HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Mary's scored its eight runs on nine hits with four OLLU errors, while the Saints tallied two runs on six hits with two Rattler miscues.
Six of those nine hits came from junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso, Texas) and freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) as they recorded three each. Hernandez tied his season-high with five RBIs in the game and Mares stole a career-high three bases. Freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) and junior Andrew Perez (El Paso) each scored two runs at the top of the lineup after McGowen was hit by a pitch twice and walked once and Perez had two hits and was walked twice.

Junior Matt Merrill (San Antonio) was awarded the win after pitching three solid innings in a pitch-by-committee day. Merrill allowed only two hits and struck out one in pitching the second, third and fourth innings to move to 1-1 on the season. Senior Oscar Sepulveda (San Antonio) got the start and worked a three-up, three-down first inning. Levi Hon (Wylie, Texas), Branson Hall (Lubbock, Texas) and Mason Minister (San Antonio) also took the hill for the Rattlers and each struck out two for a combined seven on the day.

Starter Alec Martinez took the loss for the Saints after throwing the first three frames. He gave up two runs on three hits, walking one and striking out two. OLLU used five other hurlers in relief – all pitching one inning each.

McGowen walked to begin the game. He advanced to third on a shot to right field off the bat of Perez – who scampered to second when he saw the throw coming in to third base. Hernandez tripled to the flag pole in right center to clear the bases and give the Rattlers the early 2-0 advantage.
In the fourth inning, senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) led off with a bullet past the third baseman and sophomore Scott Short (Ingram, Texas) sacrificed him to second. Mares singled back up the middle to plate Vela for the third run of the contest.

The Saints scored one run in the top of the fifth for the 3-1 tally. McGowen was plunked to lead off the fifth and Perez reached second on a fielding error by the right fielder. Both scored on a single to left center by Hernandez for the 5-1 lead.

For the third straight inning, the Rattlers were able to plate a run. Mares led off with a single to short and stole second. Junior Ragan Forrest (Lorena, Texas) reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. Junior Steven Wynn (San Antonio) reached on a fielder's choice when he bounced to the third baseman – who was able to tag out Mares. McGowen struck out – but the double steal was in effect with Forrest and Wynn – and the catcher overthrew third base – allowing Forrest to score. Hernandez flared a single to left to score Wynn to give the Rattlers the 7-1 advantage.

Junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas), pinch hitting for Wynn, walked to begin the Rattlers half of the eighth. McGowen was once again hit by a pitch and Mueller swiped third base. Perez walked to load the bases. With one out, sophomore Javier Camacho (Corpus Christi, Texas), pinch hitting, hit into a fielder's choice that scored Mueller for the team's eighth run of the game. OLLU scored one run in the top of the ninth for the 8-2 final tally.
