Baseball Homecoming starts with split against UAFS

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's baseball team began Homecoming weekend with a split against the visiting Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions, dropping game one 2-0 before bouncing back to win game two 7-6 in thrilling come-from-behind fashion.

The Rattlers are now 21-11 on the year and 3-2 in Heartland Conference play, while the Lions are an even .500 at 13-13 and 1-4 in league action. The Blue & Gold were also extremely successful on the base paths, going 8-for-8 in stolen bases with seven in the second game.

Junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) went 3-for-6 on the day with a double, walk and a run scored, while freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) was 4-for-9 with a double and three runs scored. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso, Texas), sophomore Scott Short (Ingram, Texas) and junior Andrew Perez (El Paso) all also had three hits on the day.

GAME ONE RECAP
Both teams managed five singles in the game, but the Lions bunched three of theirs together to squeak out the 2-0 win, while the Rattlers staggered theirs throughout the seven innings.

Junior Zach De La Garza (San Antonio) pitched the complete game for the Rattlers, moving to 6-3 on the year after giving up one earned run on five hits. He walked three and struck out five in 95 pitches.

Javon Rigsby threw the complete game for the Lions, allowing five hits, walking one and striking out two in 97 pitches to even his record at 3-3.
All 10 hits in the game were by different players, with the five for the Rattlers coming by Hernandez, senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas), Short, freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) and Mueller. Mueller also drew the lone walk for the Blue & Gold.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Rattlers jumped out to the early 4-0 lead, but the Lions fought back to tie the game at four and five before taking the 6-5 lead in the sixth. St. Mary's fought back to score two in the bottom of the eighth and held the Lions off the board in the ninth to get the victory.

Junior Mason Minister (San Antonio) improved to 3-0 on the year after pitching the final four innings of the game. He held the Lions scoreless and gave up only two hits, walking one and striking out three as the Rattlers mounted their comeback. Freshman Connor Schmidt (Devine, Texas) got the start on the hill, lasting 3 2/3 innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits with one walk and one strikeout. Junior Tyler Dick pitched the other 1 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits with three walks.

McGowen went 4-for-5 in the game in the leadoff spot and scored three of the team's seven runs, while Perez was 3-for-5 with one run and an RBI in the two hole. Hernandez, Short and Mueller each added a pair of hits and Hernandez and junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso) each had two RBIs in the win.

McGowen singled up the middle and Perez sent a shot past the third baseman. After a double steal, Hernandez also singled between the short stop and third baseman to score McGowen and give the Rattlers their first lead of the day, 1-0. Fennell hit a fantastic bunt down the first base line to score Perez and move Hernandez to second. Vela grounded out to second, but advanced the runner and Hernandez scored on a single up the middle off the bat of Short. Short stole second on a delayed steal and moved to third when the catcher overthrew second base. He scored when the shortstop misplayed the ball off freshman Jake Mares' (Fort Worth, Texas) bat for the 4-0 lead.

The Lions tied the score in the top of the fourth with four runs on five hits and a Rattler error and knocked Schmidt out of the game.

McGowen legged out a single to third to lead off the Rattlers half of the fourth. Perez singled past the diving short stop and this time McGowen was safe under the tag at third, which forced UAFS to go to the bullpen. Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate McGowen and give the lead back to the Rattlers, 5-4.

UAFS once again knotted the game with one run in the fifth, but left the bases loaded for the 5-5 tally. The Lions took the lead on an unearned run in the sixth on a throwing error by the pitcher on a bunt attempt for the 6-5 lead.

With one out in the eighth, Mueller doubled to right center and McGowen hit a dribbler to the left of the mound to put runners on the corners. Perez nailed a single between the short stop and third baseman to score Mueller and tie the game at 6-6. With two outs, Fennell singled on the right field line about 15 feet behind first base to score McGowen from second base for the 7-6 advantage.
