Softball sweeps Saturday from Dust Devils

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAREDO, Texas – Game one was a pitching gem and game two was an offensive explosion for the St. Mary's softball team as they swept the doubleheader from Texas A&M International on Saturday afternoon. The Rattlers won 3-0 and 11-6 at the TAMIU Softball Field to win the series from the Dust Devils, 2-1.

With the two wins on the day, the Rattlers are now 19-15 on the year and 9-6 in Heartland Conference play while the Dust Devils move to 14-19 overall and 8-9 in conference action.

Both juniors Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) and Taylor Germain (San Antonio) hit .500 on the day. Johns was 4-for-8 with three RBIs, one run scored and a double, while Germain was 3-for-6 with two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. Senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) was 4-for-9 with a pair of home runs, seven RBIs, four runs scored and 10 total bases and both sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) and freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin) had three hits over the two games. The team combined to hit .359, while the pitchers (Johns and sophomore Alex McLennan) held the Dust Devils to .208 with just one extra base hit on the day.

The Rattlers remain on the road, playing a doubleheader at St. Edward's on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m. before heading to Tarleton State for a non-conference doubleheader against the Texanns on the following Tuesday, slated to start at 2 p.m. The club returns home on Friday, April 5 to host Newman at 4 p.m. for a twinbill.

GAME ONE RECAP
S. Johns pitched her second complete game against the Dust Devils in as many days, giving up one run on just two hits with one walk and 12 strike outs, one off her season high to improve to 11-8 on the year.

Germain was 2-for-2 at the plate, while S. Johns was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso) and Aldridge each had an RBI for the Rattlers, while Nash and Carney scored the other two runs.

Jenika Lombrana, who pitched the complete game in the win on Friday for the Dust Devils, also tossed the entire seven frames for the first game on Saturday. She did not allow an earned run on eight hits, walking two and striking out two.

Johns struck out the side in the bottom of the first and ended up getting through the Dust Devils in order in the second thanks to a caught stealing in the second.

The Rattlers scored three in the top of the third. Nash reached on a throwing error by the second baseman to kick the inning off. Johns helped her own cause by singling back up the middle. Carney singled to left to load the bases and Moreno hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Nash for the first run of the game. Aldridge singled to short to score Johns and then stole second. The catcher overthrew second, allowing Carney to scamper home for the third run of the inning.

The Rattlers had base runners in the final three innings, but were unable to push any more runs across.

The Dust Devils scored one in the sixth on a sacrifice fly for the 3-1 final tally.

GAME TWO RECAP
Nash recorded a career-high seven RBIs in the 11-6 victory, hitting two home runs in the same game for the first time this year. She was 4-for-5 with three runs scored out of the leadoff position. S. Johns, Carney, Aldridge and freshman Jayme Johns (Elgin) also had two hits in the nightcap as the Rattlers scored their 11 runs on 15 hits with three Dust Devil errors.

McLennan (Austin, Texas) pitched the entire game for the Blue & Gold, giving up five earned runs (six total) on nine hits, walking three and striking out five. It is her second complete game of the year as she improves to 6-3.

The Dust Devils broke onto the scoreboard first with one run in the second, but the Rattlers immediately answered with four runs in the third.
Germain reached on a fielding error by the third baseman to begin the inning and she was successfully sacrificed to second by McLennan. Freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin) also reached via an error, this time by the short stop, to put runners on the corners. Nash singled to left field to score Germain and freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) followed with a single to first base to load the bases. S. Johns doubled down the left field line to score all three Rattlers and give the Blue & Gold the 4-1 advantage.

Aldridge singled back to the pitcher to kick things off in the fourth and Germain singled to left. With one out, J. Johns bunted for a single to load the bases and on the first pitch, Nash blasted a grand slam down the left field line to double the score at 8-1.

Aldridge led off the fifth inning as well, singling to third base. With two outs, she stole second and scored when J. Johns singled back up the middle. Nash homered for the second time in the game, stretching the lead to 11-1.

Seven singles for the Dust Devils in the fifth inning added five runs to make the score 11-6.

A six pitch inning was all it took for McLennan to retire the side in order in the seventh to give the Rattlers the 11-6 victory.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Staci Johns has struck out at least five in her last five appearances in the circle, including 12 in game one on Saturday. The 12 K's is one off her career-high of 13 from Feb. 7 against Regis.
  • Raynelle Nash becomes the first Rattler to hit two home runs in a game since Abigale Carney did it at Oklahoma Christian on March 3, 2018 in an 11-0 victory. Carney also hit a grand slam and had a two-run home run, while Nash hit a grand slam and a three-run shot on Saturday in game two.
  • Nash is also the first player this season to record a four-hit game this year for the Rattlers. She is tied for the team lead for multi-hit games with 10 with Taylor Germain. Nash has six two-hit games, three three-hit games and one four-hit contest, while Germain has nine two-hit games and one three-hit contest in 2019.
  • Alex Moreno has the team's longest current active hitting streak at four-straight games. She has also reached base in 12 of the last 13 games, raising her batting average to a season-best .250.

  • Taylor Germain has also reached base in eight of the last nine games with 10 hits during that stretch.
  • Victoria Aldridge stole one base in each of the two games today, doubling her season total to four.
TEAM NOTES
  • The 11 runs scored in game two ties for the team season-high from the contest against Fort Lewis on Feb. 16.
  • The 15 hits are also a season high, bettering the previous high of 13 from the game against Simon Fraser on Feb. 17. It is the 11th time the Rattlers have recorded 10 or more hits in a contest this season.
  • The 11 RBIs are also a season-high, one more than the previous high of 10, recorded both against Fort Lewis and Simon Fraser.
  • The two home runs by Raynelle Nash bring the team's season total to seven.
  • For the sixth time this year, the Rattler pitching didn't allow any extra base hits as Alex McLennan held the Dust Devils to all singles in the nightcap.
