Softball struggles to find offense

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

LAREDO, Texas – The St. Mary's softball team struggled to get any offense going in the first of three games at Texas A&M International on Friday afternoon, falling 3-0.

The Rattlers (17-15, 7-6 Heartland Conference) managed three hits on the day with one each coming off the bats of junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas), sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso, Texas) and junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio).

Johns pitched the complete game – her 15th of the year – to move to 10-8 on the season. She allowed three runs on six hits, walking only one and striking out five.

Jenika Lombrana threw a complete game for the Dust Devils (14-17, 8-7 Heartland) as well, allowing three hits and striking out four in the shutout victory. She improves to 6-8 on the season.

Texas A&M International scored two runs in the first inning on three hits, including a solo home run and added one run off another solo shot in the second frame for its three runs in the contest. After giving up the home run in the second, Johns retired the next eight batters she faced before a leadoff single in the fifth broke the streak.

The two teams return to the diamond tomorrow to conclude the series in Laredo in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for Noon.
