Baseball sets season highs in five categories in lopsided win

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA, Kan. – The St. Mary's baseball offense exploded for season-highs in hits, runs, RBIs, extra-base hits and total bases in the 15-1 run-rule win over Newman on Friday afternoon.

The Rattlers improved to 19-10 on the year and 2-1 in Heartland Conference play in winning the rubber match against the Jets, who fell to 12-11 overall and 1-2 in league action.

St. Mary's scored 15 runs on 18 hits with three Jets errors, while Newman scored one run on four hits with one Rattler miscue.

Freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) went 4-for-4 out of the leadoff spot with three runs scored and three RBIs, while junior Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) was 3-for-5 with four RBIs and one run scored from the two spot and junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso) went 2-for-5 with a pair of two-run home runs, four RBIs and two runs scored as the cleanup hitter. Senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) also went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBIs and both junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) and junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso) added a pair of hits in the lopsided win.

Sophomore Jacob Koehler (New Braunfels, Texas) pitched a complete-game victory to improve to 2-0 on the season after giving up just one run on four hits, walking one and striking out a career-best eight hitters.

Andrew Snyder fell to 2-4 for the Jets after pitching the first three innings. He gave up six earned runs on 10 hits, walking one and striking out two. Newman used three other pitchers in relief.

The Blue & Gold will host Our Lady of the Lake in a non-conference tilt on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Dickson Stadium before bringing Arkansas-Fort Smith to town for a three-game Heartland Conference series over the weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 3 p.m. and conclude on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a single contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Mary's scored two in the top of the first and never trailed. McGowen singled past the short stop to get the game started and with one out he stole second base. Hernandez homered to left field for the 2-0 lead. The Jets scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the first to cut the lead in half, 2-1.

Freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) led off the second inning with a single through the right side and Parrish bunted for a single. With one out, the team successfully executed the double steal and McGowen walked to load the bases. Perez singled to left field to plate Mares for the 3-1 lead.
The third inning began with Fennell hitting one over the left field wall to stretch the advantage to 4-1.

The Rattlers exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning. Mueller kicked things off with a single between the third baseman and short stop and McGowen bunted for a single. Perez singled and moved to second on the throw to knock the starting pitcher out of the game. McGowen moved to third and scored on a throwing error by the left fielder and Mueller scored ahead of him. Hernandez welcomed Roger Wilson to the game with a home run to left field on his first pitch, making the score 8-1. With one out, senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) reached on an error by the second baseman and he moved to second on a passed ball. Short walked and both Vela and Short advanced a base on a groundout by Mares. Parrish doubled to right center to plate two more. Mueller singled to the short stop to place runners on the corners and McGowen got his second hit of the inning with a double down the right field line to score two more for the eighth run of the frame and the 12-1 score.

Short started the sixth with a single down the right field line but was erased on a fielder's choice that left Mares at first. Parrish singled up the middle and with two outs, McGowen again doubled down the right field line to score Mares. Perez followed with a double to left center to add another two runs for the 15-1 final score.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Patrick Fennell has now tied for the longest reached base streak of the season at 14 games, tying Andrew Perez' streak from earlier this year.
  • Scott Short has also reached base in 12 straight games, the longest of the year for him and tied for the third-longest streak on the club for the season.
  • Freshman Ryan McGowen has the team's longest current active hitting streak at six games, while Johnny Hernandez is right behind him at five games.
  • Johnny Hernandez is the second player this season to hit two home runs in the same game, joining Keaton Milford. His first home run was on a full count, while his second home run was a first-pitch and both were two-run homers to left field. • The 14 RBIs is one better than the team's season-high of 13 from game one at Texas A&M International on March 8.
  • The three home runs hit by the Rattlers match the season high hit in the season opener against Central Missouri on Feb. 1.
