Baseball opens conference play with split on day one

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA, Kan. – On a blustery day in Wichita, the St. Mary's baseball team came from behind in the first game to win 7-3 in the first game, while Newman turned the tables and came-back to win the nightcap 6-5 at McCarthy Field.

The Rattlers (18-10, 1-1 Heartland Conference) had eight of the nine spots in the order reach base in each of the two games and they out-hit the Jets (12-10, 1-1 Heartland) .324 to .317 on the day.

The two clubs will conclude their final Heartland Conference series on Friday at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE RECAP
Both junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso, Texas) and senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) went 3-for-4 in the middle of the lineup and Fennell had half of the team's RBIs with three to pace the Rattlers in the first game. Sophomore Scott Short (Ingram, Texas) and junior Andrew Perez (El Paso) also went 2-for-4 at the plate to help lead the Rattlers to 14 hits.

St. Mary's scored six of its seven runs in the seventh inning, while Newman scored all three of its runs in the first frame. The Jets tallied eight hits and committed two errors.

The Rattlers continued to be aggressive on the base paths, stealing two bases with freshmen Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) and Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) each swiping one and defensively, senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) threw out two of the three would-be base stealers for the Jets.

Junior Zach De La Garza (San Antonio) pitched his second complete game of the year to improve to 6-2. He allowed three runs on eight hits, walking only one and striking out nine.

Garrett Hammond recorded the loss for the Jets, falling to 1-1 on the year. He came in midway through the sixth inning for starter Ryan Boaz. In 2/3 of an inning, Hammond allowed four runs on three hits and struck out two.

After the Jets scored three runs in the first inning, the Rattlers got one back in the third on three hits - all with two outs. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso) singled to center and Vela singled up the middle to put runners on first and second. Fennell followed with a single to left to plate Hernandez to make the score 3-1.

In the seventh, McGowen got things started with a single to right field. With one out, he stole second and scored on Perez' triple to center. Perez scored on a balk to knot the game at 3-3. Hernandez was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single to right off the bat of Vela. After a pitching change, the pair moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch and both scored on a single up the middle by Fennell. Freshman Shawn Tober (San Antonio) pinch ran for Fennell. Short singled up the middle and Tober moved to third after the centerfielder made an error. Parrish was hit by a pitch to load the bases and the Jets went to the bullpen for the third time in the game. Steven Wynn (San Antonio) singled between the third baseman and short stop to plate Tober and McGowen walked to score Short for the seventh and final run of the game.

GAME TWO RECAP
St. Mary's scored its five runs on eight hits and was aided by five Newman errors, while the Jets scored six runs on 11 hits with one Rattler miscue in the nine-inning nightcap.

McGowen had two of the team's eight hits, while Fennell recorded two of the five RBIs.

Freshman Connor Schmidt (Devine, Texas) pitched a solid seven innings in a no decision for the Rattlers. He gave up just two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out three. Junior Tyler Dick (San Antonio) gave up three runs on four hits with one strikeout in one inning of work and junior Johnny Panatex (Pflugerville, Texas) fell to 1-1 after giving up one run on one hit with two walks (both intentional) in 1/3 of an inning.

Newman once again scored in the third inning, this time plating one run.

The Rattlers immediately answered with two runs in the top of the fourth. Perez reached on an error by the second baseman to begin the inning and Hernandez moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. He moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Vela walked and Fennell doubled to left center to score both for the 2-1 lead.

The score remained 2-1 until the seventh inning. Short walked to kick things off. With two outs he stole second and scored on a McGowen single to right center. Newman answered with one run on one hit in the bottom half for the 3-2 Rattlers lead.

Hernandez began the eighth with a double to left center and he moved to third on a groundout by Vela. With two outs, Short singled to second base to plate Hernandez and increase the lead to 4-2, but once again the Jets answered with one run in the bottom half to keep it a one-run game, 4-3.

Junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) doubled to centerfield to lead off the ninth and McGowen reached via an error by the short stop and got to second base. Mares hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Mueller for the 5-3 advantage. Three straight singles by the Jets to begin their half of the ninth tied the game at 5-5. With one out, the Rattlers chose to intentionally walk two batters to set up the force at any base, but the Jets were able to score the winning run on a fielder's choice instead of the desired double play.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • The nine strikeouts by Zach De La Garza is one off his season high of 10 from Feb. 15 against Texas A&M Kingsville. De La Garza has fanned four or more in every start and seven or more in six of his eight starts in 2019. The one walk was a season low, bettering the two he had done on three different occasions.
  • Patrick Fennell extended his reached base safely streak to 13 consecutive games with hits in both games. Fennell is now just one off the longest streak of the year of 14 by Andrew Perez.
  • Scott Short has also reached base safely in 11 straight contests and he's recorded a hit in 10 of those 11 after hits in both games today.
  • Freshman Ryan McGowen has the longest current hitting streak on the team at five straight games.
  • With his 2-for-4 performance in game one, Andrew Perez now has an even dozen multi-hit games on the year to lead the club. Perez has nine two-hit games, two three-hit games and one five-hit game this season.
  • With multiple RBIs in both games, Fennell is now tied for the team lead in multi-RBI games with six this season. Fennell has five two-RBI games and one three-RBI game – that one coming in game one against Newman. He has seven RBIs in the last three games.
TEAM NOTES
  • Game two was the first game this season the Rattlers have lost when leading after eight innings. The team is now 12-1 when leading after 8.
  • The Rattlers stretched their streak to eight straight games with at least one stolen base after stealing two in game one and one in game two.
  • After not grounding into any double plays in seven games, the Rattlers ground into two in game one against Newman. The team has still ground into only six all year.
