Softball drops pair at Rogers State

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The St. Mary's softball team played in another pair of one-run games on Friday, however neither went the way of the Rattlers as they dropped 2-1 and 5-4 decisions at Rogers State to move to 4-2 in Heartland Conference play and 13-8 on the year.

Sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in the doubleheader, while both senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) and junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) were 4-for-7. Nash also scored twice and hit her first home run of the season. The other two runs of the day were scored by San Antonio freshmen Bari Christian and Aracelli Sanchez.

Johns took both losses to move to 8-4 on the season. She pitched another complete game in the opener and struck out seven, giving up two runs on four hits and then she moved from first base to the circle for the final two innings of game two, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and three strike outs.

The Rattlers step out of Heartland Conference action for a doubleheader on Tuesday at Texas A&M-Kingsville, beginning at 5 p.m. before traveling to Lubbock Christian for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 8 at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader and concluding on Saturday with one game at noon.

GAME ONE RECAP
Both teams managed four hits in the game, but Rogers State pushed across one more run for the 2-1 victory in the first game.

The four hits for the Rattlers came from the top four batters in the lineup as Nash, Christian, Johns and Carney each had one.

St. Mary's scored first, plating one run in the fourth on a cold and cloudy day. With one out, Christian singled to left and Johns followed with a single to centerfield. Carney singled down the left field line to score Christian for the 1-0 lead.

The Hillcats answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth and got a solo home run to centerfield in the bottom of the seventh by the leadoff batter for the 2-1 victory.

GAME TWO RECAP
Errors proved costly in the nightcap for the Rattlers as they committed four in the 5-4 loss. StMU doubled up RSU in hits, 12-to-6, but Rogers State turned two double plays to help limit the damage and the Rattlers stranded five runners on base.

Sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin, Texas) started game two in the circle for the Blue & Gold. She allowed just one earned run (four total) on four hits, walking three and striking out two in a no decision. Johns finished the game for the Rattlers.

Nash and Johns were both 3-for-4 at the plate, while Carney was 2-for-2 and junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Nash scored two of the team's four runs, while Carney and freshman Aracelli Sanchez (San Antonio) scored the other two.

St. Mary's scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Nash led off the game with a home run to left field – her first of the season. With one out, Johns singled to second base and Sanchez pinch ran for her. Carney singled up the middle and senior Kristal Salinas (San Antonio) advanced both of them a bag with a ground out to the pitcher. Germain singled up the middle and moved to second on the throw and two runs scored for the 3-0 lead.

The Hillcats got one run back in their half of the first and added one in the third and two in the fourth for the 4-3 lead. The Rattlers tied the score in the top fifth with one run. Nash again got things going, this time with a single. With one out, Johns singled to the pitcher. Nash moved to second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the third baseman. Carney hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Nash.

Rogers State again had the answer, scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth on one hit, a steal, an advance on a groundout and a score on a wild pitch.
