By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's baseball team dropped a home doubleheader to Lubbock Christian in a non-conference battle, losing 4-2 and 10-3 on a cloudy Friday afternoon at Dickson Stadium.

The Rattlers are now 9-8 on the year, while the Chaps are 10-4. The two teams will conclude this three game set on Saturday at 1 p.m. The two clubs will meet again on May 3-4 in the final regular season series of the year in Heartland Conference play before the last-ever Heartland Conference Tournament.

Freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) went 3-for-5 over the twinbill with three walks, one run, one RBI and a stolen base, while senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) was 3-for-6 with a walk, a run and a stolen base. Freshman Jake Mares also had a multi-hit afternoon, going 2-for-6 with a run, an RBI and he was hit by a pitch.

GAME ONE RECAP
Junior Zach De La Garza (San Antonio) moved to 3-2 on the year with the loss on the hill. He had a shutout through four innings, but Lubbock Christian scored one in the fifth, one in the sixth and he was responsible for one of the two in the seventh. All three runs were earned in his 6 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, walking six and striking out seven. Junior Levi Hon (Wylie, Texas) pitched the final 1/3 of a frame, giving up one run on one hit with one strikeout.

Vela went 2-for-3 at the plate, while McGowen was 1-for-1 with a run scored and two walks. Junior Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) scored the other run and had an RBI and junior Keaton Milford (New Braunfels, Texas) had the second RBI. A. Perez and Mares recorded the other two hits in the game for the Rattlers.

LCU scored four runs on six hits and was helped by three errors by StMU errors. The Rattlers scored two runs on five hits with one Chap miscue. The Chaps left seven on base, while the Rattlers stranded four.

Ryan Johnson pitched the complete game for the Chaps, walking two and striking out three. He improved to 4-0 on the year with the victory.
The Rattlers broke onto the scoreboard first with two runs in the bottom of the first. McGowen walked to begin the game and with one out he stole second. A. Perez singled through the right side, advancing to second on the throw and McGowen scored on the play. Perez moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch and scored on a Milford ground out to short stop. Milford was later hit by a pitch and removed from the game, he'll be out for an undisclosed amount of time.

LCU scored one run in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh for the 4-2 win.

GAME TWO RECAP
McGowen went 2-for-4 in the nightcap and had an RBI to pace the Rattlers, while Vela, Mares and junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) each had one of the other three hits.

The Rattlers scored three runs on five hits with two errors, while the Chaps scored 10 runs on 17 hits with two errors.

Freshman Connor Schmidt (Devine, Texas) pitched six innings, giving up six runs on 11 hits, walking two and striking out seven. Senior Oscar Sepulveda (San Antonio) threw the next 2/3 of an inning, allowing two runs on two hits, walking one and junior Matt Merrill (San Antonio) pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on four hits, walking one and striking out one.

Callan Johnson (3-1) got the win on the hill for the Chaps after pitching six innings. He allowed two earned runs on three hits, walking three and striking out six. Both Logan McCrummen (two innings) and Cody Lancaster (one inning) worked in scoreless relief and each struck out one without walking anyone.

LCU scored two runs in the first inning and two in the third. The Rattlers got two back in the bottom of the third and one in the fourth. Mares led off the third with a single up the middle and junior Ragan Forrest (Lorena, Texas) reached on a fielder's choice where both runners ended up safe. An error by the catcher moved both runners up 90 feet. With one out, McGowen singled to the short stop to plate Mares. Senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) reached on an error by the left fielder to score Forrest for the 4-2 tally.

In the fourth, Vela walked to begin the inning and with one out, he stole second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Mares grounded out to second base and scored Vela to bring the Rattlers within one, 4-3.
