Baseball's streak snapped by ranked Rams

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – There were three lead changes in the game, but unfortunately the St. Mary's baseball team couldn't come up with a fourth one to defeat the 23rd-ranked Angelo State Rams on Tuesday night, falling 7-6 in a drama filled affair at Dickson Stadium.

The Rattlers (17-9) out-hit the visiting Rams (19-5) 11-to-8, but stranded nine base runners, compared to just six for ASU. The Rattlers committed two errors in the game, while the Rams didn't have any.

Senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) was 4-for-4 at the plate with a walk. He hit three singles and a double, had two RBIs and scored a run to pace the Rattlers. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso, Texas) went 3-for-5 with a run scored and junior Andrew Perez (El Paso) scored two runs. Freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) was the other Rattler to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.

Senior Oscar Sepulveda (San Antonio) moved to 2-3 on the season after pitching six innings for the Blue & Gold. He gave up five earned runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out four. Junior Matt Merrill (San Antonio) retired the only batter he faced, while junior Levi Hon (Wylie, Texas) threw 1 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit. He walked three and fanned two. Senior Branson Hall (Lubbock, Texas) pitched the final frame, walking one and striking out another.

The Rams used a pitcher-by-committee approach, throwing five different arms on the evening. Nick Coffman was the pitcher of record, improving to 3-0 after giving up one run on two hits with one strike out in one inning of work – the sixth. Josh Barnett worked a two inning save for her third of the year. He walked two – his first two of the season – and struck out three.

The Rattlers will quickly head to Wichita, Kan. to begin Heartland Conference play for the final time against Newman. The games have been moved up one day due to the threat of storms and will now take place on Thursday at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader and Friday at 1 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
With two outs in the first inning Perez walked, Hernandez hit the first pitch back up the middle and Vela took the first pitch through the right side to score Perez and give the Rattlers a 1-0 lead.

Angelo State tied the game in the top of the third with the help of a Rattler error and took the lead on a solo home run by Lachlan Mayo in the top of the fourth. They added one more run on two hits in the fifth for the 3-1 advantage.

McGowen began the fifth with a base knock back up the middle. Freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) grounded into a fielder's choice where the second baseman stepped on the bag to get McGowen out. Perez also grounded into a fielder's choice, erasing Mares off the base path and Hernandez roped his third single of the day between the short stop and third baseman. Vela once again singled through the right side for his second RBI of the day to put runners on the corners. Vela moved to second on a wild pitch and he and Hernandez both came around to score on a flare single to center off the bat of junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso) to give the lead back to the Rattlers, 4-3.

Sepulveda retired the side in order in the top of the sixth to get his offense right back to work. With one out, junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) bunted a ball just to the left of the pitcher's mound for a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. McGowen singled just past a diving first baseman into right field to plate Mueller and stretch the lead to two, 5-3.

Angelo State scored four runs in the top of the seventh to grab the lead back, 7-5.

Senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) walked to begin the eighth inning and was sacrificed over to second by Mueller. He moved to third on a wild pitch and McGowen walked to put runners on the corners. Mares hit into a fielder's choice again, plating Parrish to close the Rattlers within one, 7-6, but the team was unable to tie the game.
