Softball gets 1-0 shutout victory in series finale

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – It should have been no surprise for anyone who saw Friday's results of the doubleheader between the St. Mary's and Rogers State softball teams to find out the starting pitchers for Saturday's game were the two that shut down the opposing offenses, or that the contest on St. Patrick's Day would be a true pitcher's duel. The Rattlers pulled off the thrilling 1-0 victory for the 2-1 series win over the Hillcats.

The Hillcats (20-9, 7-5 Heartland Conference) Andrea Morales had a perfect game through four innings when Rattlers (17-14, 7-5 Heartland) sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) broke it up in a big way, clearing the left-center field fence for her first home run of the year.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) pitched her third complete game of the week, giving up just four hits, walking two and striking out five to improve to 10-7 on the year. It's her second shutout of the season and her 14th complete game as she lowers her ERA to 1.81.

Freshmen Victoria Aldridge (Elgin), Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso, Texas) had the other three hits for the Rattlers – all infield singles and all in the fifth inning – but the team left the bases loaded.

Morales moves to 14-5 for the Hillcats after giving up the one run on four hits with three strikeouts.

The Rattlers travel to Laredo for a three-game series at Texas A&M International. The teams will play one game on Friday at 2 and a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at Noon. The Blue & Gold don't return home until April 5 when they host Newman for a doubleheader slated to begin at 4 p.m.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Victoria Aldridge started behind the plate for the first time in her young career. Aldridge is the third catcher the Rattlers have used this year. Alex Moreno has been behind the dish for 20 games and Juliana Cerda 12.
  • Staci Johns has struck out five or more batters in her last three starts and in eight appearances this season. The junior has fanned 88 batters this year with at least one K in every game she's appeared in the circle in 2019.
  • Abigale Carney becomes the fourth different player to hit a home run for the Rattlers this season. She joins Staci Johns (2), Raynelle Nash and Kristal Salinas. It is the eighth home run of Carney's career as she hit seven as a freshman in 2018.
  • Senior Angie Camacho (New Braunfels, Texas) tied her season high in each of the last two games with four putouts in centerfield. Camacho ties her high from the Augustana contest on Feb. 2. Abigale Carney also tied her season high with four putouts in right field, tying her high from the West Texas A&M game on Feb. 3.
  • After snapping an eight-game on base streak in game two yesterday, Alex Moreno started a new streak today, going 1-for-2 at the plate. In the last 10 games, Moreno has 10 hits, three RBIs and two walks.
  • Freshman Aracelli Sanchez got the first start of her career, starting as the designated player. Sanchez has appeared in 24 games, scoring seven runs with four stolen bases being used primarily as a pinch runner.
  • Senior Raynelle Nash tied her season-high with four putouts today, both coming in the Rogers State series this weekend.
  • Staci Johns recorded a season-high three assists in the win. She previously had two assists on six different occasions.
  • Victoria Aldridge has reached base safely in six of the last seven games with five hits, a walk, a run scored and a stolen base over the stretch.
