Johns pitches a beauty in G1; long ball hurts Rattlers in G2

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's softball team snapped a three-game losing skid with a split against the first-place team in the Heartland Conference standings, Rogers State. The Rattlers took game one 5-1 but dropped the second game 8-0.

St. Mary's is now 16-14 on the year and 6-5 in Heartland Conference play, while Rogers State moves to 20-8 overall and 7-4 in league action.
Senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) had hits in both games, as did freshman Jayme Johns (Elgin, Texas). Nash was 3-for-7 with one run scored, while Johns was 3-for-5 but left the game in the fifth inning and did not return after an undisclosed injury at first base after she singled to centerfield.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin) picked up her ninth win of the year in game one, pitching her 12th complete game of the season. Johns gave up one run on five hits and struck out six without walking a single batter. It's the second-straight start and the eighth time this year she's pitched at least five innings without allowing a walk.

The Rattlers and Hillcats will conclude their season series tomorrow at Noon at the Park at StMU. RSU holds the 3-1 advantage in the meetings thus far.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Rattlers scored their five runs on 10 hits and were aided by three Hillcats errors, while Rogers State scored one run on five hits with two St. Mary's miscues.

Nash, freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) and Jayme Johns each tallied two hits, while Staci Johns helped her own cause with two of the team's four RBIs and she drew the only walk.

Tailee Reding moved to 1-1 on the year for RSU after pitching just 1/3 of an inning. She gave up two earned runs, four total, on five hits. Edie Fairchild worked the rest of the contest in the circle, allowing one run on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Nash singled off the third baseman's glove to lead off the game and Christian singled to left-center. S. Johns blasted a first pitch single to right center to bring both home. Sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) reached on an error by the centerfielder and sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso) singled through the right side to load the bases. Freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin) reached on a fielder's choice when the second baseman tried to throw home to get S. Johns at home, but threw wide of the plate, allowing Johns to score. Sophomore Juliana Cerda (San Antonio) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Carney and give the Rattlers the 4-0 lead.

With runners on first and second in the top of the third, Carney made a huge leap to save a home run in right field and preserve the shut out.
In the bottom of the fourth, Cerda had a seeing-eye single between the short stop and third baseman and freshman Aracelli Sanchez (San Antonio) courtesy ran for the catcher. Sanchez stole second, advanced to third on a line out by J. Johns and scored on a ground out by freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) to stretch the lead to 5-0.

Danelle Day wasn't about to be robbed in her next at bat, clearing the left field fence in the top of the sixth to put the Hillcats on the board, 5-1.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Rattlers managed just three hits in the second game, while the Hillcats scored eight runs on 10 hits with one StMU error.

Nash, Licon and Jayme Johns each had a hit, but they were scattered throughout, not allowing for any runs to cross the plate.

Andrea Morales was responsible for shutting down the Blue & Gold. She improved to 14-4 on the year after allowing three hits, walking one and striking out eight.

The Rattlers used a trio of pitchers. Sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin) started and ended the game, totaling 4 1/3 innings. She gave up two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out two. Junior Julia Cruz (Carrizo Springs, Texas) was in the circle for 1 2/3 innings, where she allowed two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and freshman Vanessa Garza (Seguin, Texas) appeared in the first game of her career. She pitched one complete inning, giving up four runs on three hits with one walk and one strike out.

Rogers State scored two runs in the second inning for the early 2-0 lead.

Nash broke up the no hitter in the bottom of the third with a double to left center, but she was stranded.

The Hillcats added runs off solo home runs in the top of the fifth and the sixth to stretch the lead to 4-0. Two more home runs, a solo shot and a three-run dinger brought the score to 8-0.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Senior Raynelle Nash moved into 8th on the St. Mary's career hits list with the 225th hit of her career in game two. She moved past Taylor Vidrine, who recorded 224 from 2012-15.
  • It was also the 37th double of Nash's career, tying her for 7th all-time in St. Mary's history, knotting her with Kelly Baker (2008-11) and Kirstin Simmons (2002-05).
  • Alex Moreno stretched her hitting streak to six straight games and her on-base streak to eight straight with one hit in the first game. Both streaks were snapped in game two.
  • Staci Johns struck out her 225th batter of her career and now has 226.
  • Johns also scored her sixth run of the year. That matches her first two runs combined as she had three as a freshman and three as a sophomore.
  • Both freshmen Alexa Lange (Cypress, Texas) and Vanessa Garza played in their first collegiate games today for the Rattlers, while fellow freshman Tiffany Licon got her first career starts at short stop.
  • Alex McLennan has at least one assist in her last 13 games from the circle and has 20 assists over that stretch.
  • Freshman Aracelli Sanchez stole one base in each of the two games today, doubling her season total. She is a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts and has scored seven times being used primarily as a pinch runner in 23 games.
  • Bari Christian has reached base safely in eight of the last nine games and has 12 hits over that stretch.
  • Jayme Johns is 6-for-19 at the plate in her starts and 2-for-13 when being used as a pinch hitter or a substitute this season. In the two starts today, Johns was 3-for-5.
