Eight is great for Baseball

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – With the 7-5 victory on Saturday, the St. Mary's baseball team won its eighth straight game and earned the three-game sweep over rival St. Edward's.

The Rattlers (17-8) scored their seven runs on 10 hits and were aided by two St. Edward's errors, while the Hilltoppers (11-13) tallied five runs on 11 hits.

Freshmen Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) and Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) tallied five of the team's 10 hits out of the top two spots in the lineup and scored three runs. McGowen was 2-for-4 with two runs, while Mares was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run. Junior Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) added two runs and two RBIs, while junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) had two hits in the win.

Both teams used a pitcher-by-committee approach as the Rattlers had four toe the rubber and the Hilltoppers used five on the mound. Junior Johnny Panatex (Pflugerville, Texas) earned the win for the Ratters, his first of the year, after pitching three innings where he allowed only one run on five hits and walked one. Senior Branson Hall (Lubbock, Texas) also picked up his first save of the season after throwing the final 1/3 of the ninth inning. He walked one and gave up one hit.

The Blue & Gold host Angelo State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before turning their attention to Heartland Conference play, opening at Newman with a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
St. Mary's once again jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring two in the first inning. With one out, Mares singled up the middle and Perez followed with a single past the short stop. Mares stole third and scored on a wild pitch, which allowed Perez to move to second. Perez also moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error off the bat of senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas).

The Hilltoppers scored one run in the top of the second, but the Rattlers answered with three in the bottom of the frame. Mueller, McGowen and Mares all singled by bunting to load the bases and Perez reached on a fielder's choice that knocked in two runs, but Mares was out at second. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso) singled to left and he and Perez double stole second and third, respectively. Vela grounded out to second, but Perez scored for the 5-1 lead.

St. Edward's got one run back in the fourth on two hits so the scoreboard read 5-2.

In the fifth, the Rattlers plated two more. Sophomore Scott Short (Ingram, Texas) walked to begin things and senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) sacrifice bunted him to second. With two outs, McGowen walked and Mares scored both with a triple to right center for the 7-2 advantage.
The Hilltoppers scored one in the sixth on two hits and two runs on four hits in the ninth inning to close within two runs, but the Rattlers held on for the 7-5 victory.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • The triple by Jake Mares was just the team's fourth triple of the year. Mares has two and junior Keaton Milford has the other two.
  • Johnny Panatex becomes the eighth different Rattler to win a game on the mound this season. He is now 1-0 with a 3.29 ERA in eight appearances and he also has one of the team's seven saves.
  • Andrew Perez has stolen three bases in the last four games and has been on base safely in all four.
  • Colton Parrish has reached base safely in all eight of the Rattlers wins and has six hits and five runs during the streak.
  • Derek Mueller has reached in five of the last six contests, tying his season-high with two hits today.
  • Johnny Hernandez has also reached in seven of the last eight, with nine hits, six RBIs and four walks during the streak.
  • Jake Mares has been on base in 12 straight games – all of his starts. The freshman has 13 hits, 10 RBIs, 11 runs scored, nine walks and five stolen bases during the stretch.
  • Mario Vela has recorded at least one defensive assist in the last 12 games from the short stop position and has multiple assists in 10 of those 12 games.
  • Patrick Fennell's streak of reaching base has reached double figures at 10 straight games. He had a seven-game hitting streak snapped today, but drew a walk to keep the reaching base streak alive.
  • Ryan McGowen has scored a run for the Rattlers in the last eight games and in 11 of the last 12.
  • Scott Short is in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak with 13 hits and 11 runs scored over that stretch.
TEAM NOTES
  • With three sacrifice bunts on the day, the Rattlers will likely remain ranked in the top 10 in the nation in that category. The team entered the weekend ranked 8th with 18.0 and now have 24.0.
  • The eight-game winning streak is the longest of the season and the longest since the club won 17 straight from Feb. 20-Mar. 21, 2015. (The 2018 team also had an eight game streak).
  • This is the sixth win for the Rattlers when getting out-hit by the opponent. They are 6-6 when getting out-hit in 2019.
