Baseball runs streak to seven with DH sweep of St. Ed's

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's baseball team stretched its winning streak to seven games with a doubleheader win over rival St. Edward's on Friday evening, 8-2 and 5-2.

The Rattlers are now 16-8 on the year as these are non-conference games between the two Heartland Conference foes. The three-game set concludes on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Dickson Stadium. The homestand continues on Tuesday when the Blue & Gold welcome Angelo State to town for a single game at 6 p.m. before beginning conference play on Friday at Newman.

Junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso, Texas) went a combined 4-for-7 in the doubleheader with a pair of doubles, two RBIs, two runs scored and he was hit by a pitch, serving as the designated hitter in both contests. Sophomore Scott Short (Ingram, Texas) went 2-for-4 on the day with three RBI's, two runs scored and a pair of walks, while senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) tied Short for the team lead with three RBIs. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso) led the team with three runs scored.

The defense turned two double plays in the twinbill, while four different players stole one base on offense.

The pitching for the Rattlers was extremely solid as game one starter junior Zach De La Garza (San Antonio) pitched the complete game victory for the Rattlers to improve to 5-2 on the year. He allowed two runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out seven in the seven-inning affair. Game two starter freshman Connor Schmidt improved to 3-1 on the year after allowing two runs on two hits over 6 1/3 innings. He walked four and fanned four. Junior Tyler Dick (San Antonio) earned his first save of the year with 2 2/3 of scoreless work. He gave up only two hits, walking one and striking out two.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Rattlers never trailed in the first game after scoring four runs in the first inning. The Hilltoppers actually out-hit the Rattlers 8-6, but SEU committed two errors on the first two batters of the game, compared to just one for StMU for the 8-2 St. Mary's win.

Hernandez had two of the Rattlers' six hits, going 2-for-2 at the plate, scoring twice. Vela, Fennell and Short all had a pair of RBIs and freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) also scored twice.

Ryan Hill took the loss for the Hilltoppers after pitching 4 1/3 innings. He allowed seven earned runs on six hits, walking four and striking out three. Ben Moralez threw the final 1 2/3 frames, walking one.

Freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) and Mares both reached via fielding errors to begin the game. McGowen came around to score on the error off Mares' bat, giving the Rattlers the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. Junior Andrew Perez (El Paso) flied out to right field, but moved Mares to third and he scored on a bunt single by Vela after Hernandez walked. Fennell doubled up the middle to plate both Vela and Hernandez for the 4-0 advantage.

St. Edward's got one run back in the second on a Morgan Allen solo home run for the 4-1 tally, but the Rattlers immediately answered. Mares walked to begin the bottom of the second and with one out he stole second base. Hernandez singled past the short stop to put runners on the corners and Vela hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Mares for the 5-1 score.

The Hilltoppers added one in the third so the scoreboard read 5-2 and the score remained that until the bottom of the fifth. Hernandez once again singled between short and third. Vela bunted him up 90 feet with a sacrifice. Fennell was hit by a pitch and the pair both advanced a base on a wild pitch. Short singled past the short stop to score both runners. Senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) singled through the right side and junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) walked to load the bases, which also knocked starting pitcher Hill out of the starting lineup. McGowen hit a sacrifice fly to right field for the third run of the inning to increase the Rattlers lead to the final score of 8-2.

GAME TWO RECAP
Fennell recorded three of the team's seven hits in the nightcap and he also scored one of the team's five runs. McGowen, Vela and Short each had an RBI for the club.

The Rattlers' five runs came on seven hits and were aided by four Hilltopper errors, while St. Edward's scored two runs on four hits with two StMU miscues.

The Rattlers once again jumped out to the early start, scoring three runs in the first inning, taking advantage of St. Edward's miscues. McGowen kicked off the game with a double to left center and Mares walked. McGowen stole third and scored on an error by the catcher. Mares also moved to second on the error. Perez reached on a fielder's choice that tagged Mares out at home. Hernandez reached on a fielding error by the short stop and Vela reached on a fielder's choice that scored Perez. With two outs, Short singled to shortstop to score Hernandez for the 3-0 lead.

The Blue & Gold added two in the fourth. Fennell began things with a double to left. Short walked and Parrish singled via the bunt to load the bases. With one out, McGowen hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Fennell. Parrish stole second and moved to third on an error by the catcher, which allowed Short to score and give the Rattlers the 5-0 advantage.

In the top of the seventh, the Hilltoppers scored two runs on two hits and two walks for the 5-2 final score as there was no scoring in the final two innings.
