By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

WICHITA, Kan. – The St. Mary's softball team remained undefeated in Heartland Conference play with a two-game sweep over Newman on Thursday, winning 3-1 and 2-1 in a doubleheader at the Newman Softball Field.

The Rattlers (13-6, 4-0 Heartland Conference) have now won four-straight games and nine of their last 10. The Jets are now 2-7 on the year and 1-3 in league action.

Junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio), the Heartland Conference Preseason Player of the Year, hit .600 over the twinbill, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a walk, while freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, a walk, a sacrifice fly and a run scored. Sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) scored the team's other run on the afternoon, while senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) had two RBIs and sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso) had the other.

The series against Rogers State has been moved up due to the threat of inclement weather and will now be played at 2 and 4 p.m. on Friday, March 1 instead of Saturday.

GAME ONE RECAP
Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) improved to 8-2 on the year after pitching another complete game victory in game one of the doubleheader. Johns allowed only one run on four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts and she had a shutout going through 6 1/3 innings.

St. Mary's scored three runs on six hits, while Newman scored one run on four hits in the game. Neither team committed an error. The Rattlers left four on base, while the Jets stranded three.

Chante Purcella also pitched a complete game for Newman. She walked two and struck out eight in addition to the three runs on six hits.

The Rattlers did all their offensive damage in the second inning, scoring three runs on three hits. Carney led off with a single to center. With one out, Germain singled on a bunt and Christian walked to load the bases. Moreno also drew a base on balls to plate Carney and score the first run of the game. With two outs, Nash singled to left to score Christian and Germain for the 3-0 lead. The score remained 3-0 until the bottom of the seventh with one out when Lacey Colvin homered to left field on the first pitch for the Jets lone run of the game.

GAME TWO RECAP
Junior Julia Cruz (Asherton, Texas) started in the circle for the Rattlers in the nightcap, but it was sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin, Texas) who got the win to improve to 3-1 on the season. Cruz pitched four innings allowing one run on three hits, walking two and striking out two before turning the ball over to McLennan. McLennan didn't allow a run on three hits and walked one, while fanning three over the final three innings.

St. Mary's scored two runs on three hits, while Newman tallied one run on six hits. Both teams had one miscue each. The Rattlers left seven runners on, while the Jets stranded eight.

The Jets broke onto the scoreboard first, scoring one run in the bottom of the second on another Colvin home run, but the Rattlers immediately answered with one in the top of the third. Moreno walked to lead off the inning and freshman Aracelli Sanchez (San Antonio) was used as a courtesy runner. Senior Angie Camacho (New Braunfels, Texas) followed with a walk and Nash moved both up a base with a groundout to first base. Christian hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Sanchez from third to knot the score at 1-1.

The game remained tied until the top of the seventh when Germain started things off with a single past the short stop. With two outs she advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin) walked, as did Nash to load the bases and Christian again came through with a timely hit, singling to left field to plate Germain for the winning run, 2-1.
