Baseball sweeps twinbill to extend winning streak to five

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANTONIO – Patience at the plate paid off for the St. Mary's baseball team on Saturday as the team's 20 walks and 20 hits over the twinbill turned into 21 runs as the Rattlers swept Tarleton State, winning 13-4 and 8-6 amidst cold and rainy conditions.

The Rattlers (6-1) have now won five straight games this season, with four of those coming over the Texans (1-5).

Both senior Donnie Perez (San Antonio) and junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader. Perez scored two runs, drove in three runs and drew three walks, while Mueller scored five times, walked four times and was 2-for-2 in stolen bases. Juniors Keaton Milford (New Braunfels, Texas) and Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) also both went 4-for-8 on the day. Milford continue to drive in runs at a high pace, recording seven RBIs and scoring four runs, while Perez had four RBIs.

On the mound, the five pitchers in the two games, combined for an ERA of 4.50 with one save over the 16.0 innings. They allowed just eight earned runs on 14 hits, walking nine and striking out 18. Four of the five hurlers struck out three or more Texans each.

The Rattlers hit the road for a midweek contest at Angelo State on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. before returning home to host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday (4 p.m.) and Saturday (DH at 1/3 p.m.)

GAME ONE RECAP
Milford once again came up big with his bat, going 3-for-4 at the plate with six RBIs. The top of the lineup was extremely productive as well, with leadoff hitter Mueller and number two hitter Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) each going 2-for-3 with four runs scored. Andrew Perez was also 2-for-3 in the first game with three RBIs.

Senior Oscar Sepulveda (San Antonio) picked up his second win of the season after pitching five solid innings. He allowed just one run on four hits, walking two and striking out six. Freshman Matt Moran (San Antonio) worked just 1/3 of an inning, giving up three runs on three hits and walking three, while junior Johnny Panatex (Pflugerville, Texas) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings in scoreless fashion. He didn't allow a hit, struck out three and walked one.

Mueller kicked things off with a single to right center and moved to third on a first pitch single to first base off the bat of Parrish. With one out, Milford hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to score Mueller for the first run of the game. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso) drew a walk to put runners on first and second and A. Perez singled through the right side to plate Parrish and give the Rattlers the early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the second, the Texans got one of the runs back for the 2-1 score, but the Rattlers exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the inning for the 7-1 score.

With one out, freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Mueller followed with a four pitch walk and Parrish reached on a fielder's choice where everyone ended up safe. D. Perez singled to third base to score McGowen and Milford singled through the right side to score both Mueller and Parrish. A passed ball moved Perez and Milford up 90 feet and Perez scored on a Hernandez single through the right side. A. Perez followed with another single – this one past the short stop to plate Milford and give the Rattlers the fifth run of the inning and the seventh of the game.

After giving up a leadoff single, Sepulveda retired the next three batters in order to get his offense right back to work in the third. The Texans went to the bullpen, bringing in M. Pilato and he walked Mueller on four straight pitches to begin the inning. Parrish and D. Perez also walked to load the bases. Milford singled through the right side to score another two runs and knock Pilato out of the game. Hernandez walked and A. Perez hit into a fielder's choice but plated D. Perez for the 10th run of the game. With two outs, Vela reached on an error by the short stop and Milford scored for the 11-1 lead.
With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Parrish singled through the right side and Milford doubled to left center to give the Rattlers an even dozen runs.
Tarleton scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to bring the score to 12-4, but the Rattlers offense wasn't finished. With one out in the bottom of the frame, Mueller singled to center and junior Steven Wynn (San Antonio), pinch hitting for D. Perez, singled up the middle to move Mueller to third. He scored on an error off the bat of Milford for the final run of the game.

GAME TWO RECAP
Perez paced the offense from the designated hitter's spot, going 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs, while Parrish, Milford and Wynn each scored twice. A. Perez also had two hits in the nightcap,

Senior Branson Hall (Lubbock, Texas) earned the win on the mound for St. Mary's after pitching five innings. He allowed four runs on six hits, walking two and striking out four. Junior Mason Minister (San Antonio) pitched the final four innings to get the save. He didn't allow an earned run and gave up just one hit. He walked one Texan and fanned five.

Tarleton State scored two runs in the top of the first, but the Rattlers immediately answered with a pair of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Mueller once again began things with a walk and he promptly stole second base. Parrish walked on four-straight bases and Mueller moved to third on a passed ball. Parrish also swiped second base and D. Perez singled to short stop to score the first Rattlers run. Milford reached on an error by the left fielder to score Parrish and knot the score at 2-2.

The Texans got one run back in the top of the second inning, but once again StMU had an immediate answer. With one out, Wynn walked on four straight pitches and moved to third when Mueller singled through the right side. Parrish hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Wynn and tie the score at 3-3.

Tarleton again pulled ahead in the fourth with one run, but the Rattlers countered and took the lead. Senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) and Wynn walked to begin the frame and Mueller sacrificed them over 90 feet with a bunt. Parrish walked to force the Texans to go to the bullpen, knocking out starter, Zach Svensson. D. Perez hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate Vela for the first run of the inning and knot the game at 4-4. Milford was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Hernandez reached on an error by the short stop that scored two runs and he moved to second on the play. Milford scored on a wild pitch to give the Rattlers four runs in the inning on no hits and stretch the lead to three, 7-4.

The Rattlers added an insurance run in the sixth inning, doubling up the Texans, 8-4. D. Perez singled to short stop to start the frame, but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Milford. Milford moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch, then scampered to third on another wild throw. A. Perez singled to right field to bring him home.

The Texans got two runs back in the top of the eighth to cut the lead in half, 8-6, which ended up being the final runs in the game and the Rattlers earned the three-game sweep.
