By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The St. Mary's baseball team snapped a five-game winning streak with an 8-7 loss at Angelo State on Tuesday afternoon. The Rattlers are now 6-2 on the year and return home to host a three-game set with Texas A&M-Kingsville, beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.

The Rattlers scored their seven runs on 12 hits and were aided by one Ram error, while Angelo State (6-2) scored its eight runs on 11 hits with no StMU miscues.

Junior Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) extended his hitting streak to six straight games with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with three runs scored, a double and a walk. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso) also recorded three hits and has now reached base safely in all eight games this season, going 3-for-5 with one run scored. Junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso) hit his first home run of the year in just his second start of the year, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Junior Mitchell Caskey (Houston, Texas) led the team with three RBIs, going 2-for-4.

Sophomore Jacob Koehler (New Braunfels, Texas) pitched the first 5 1/3 innings in a no decision. He allowed one run on four hits with no walks and struck out five. Junior Matt Merrill (San Antonio) took the loss (0-1). He allowed four runs on four hits and did not record an out. Three other hurlers combined to throw the final 2 2/3 innings.

St. Mary's jumped on the scoreboard first, plating two runs in the second inning. With one out, A. Perez walked and scored on a Fennell home run to left field for the early 2-0 lead.

The Rattlers stretched the lead to 4-0 in the sixth. With one out A. Perez singled to third base and advanced to third when Fennell doubled down the left field line. The pair scored when Caskey singled to right center.

Angelo State scored five runs on six hits in the bottom half of the sixth inning to take its first lead of the game, 5-4. The Rams added three more runs in the seventh to double up the Rattlers, 8-4.

Hernandez kicked off the eighth with a single past the short stop and A. Perez doubled to right field, moving Hernandez to third. Both scored on an error off the bat of Caskey to bring the Rattlers within two, 8-6.

With one out in the ninth, senior Donnie Perez (San Antonio) hit his third home run of the year, blasting a shot over the right field fence for the 8-7 final. Perez now has at least one hit in all eight games this season, but the Rattlers were unable to capitalize on the momentum and dropped just their second contest of the season.

The Blue & Gold play their next 11 games at Dickson Stadium, not hitting the road again until the second week of March.
