Lucky number 13 in strikeouts for Johns as Softball wins home opener

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's softball team won its season home opener in convincing style, holding Regis to just one run, while scoring six of its own on 11 hits to begin the annual St. Mary's College Softball Classic.

The Rattlers (3-3) had four players record multi-hits in the contest and both senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) and junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) each scored a pair of runs.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) pitched the complete game for the Rattlers, walking two and striking out a career-high 13 batters.

The Rangers (0-1) lone run came on a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning as they opened their season with the loss.

Nash began the game with a single up the middle and freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin) hit a comeback just to the left of the pitcher's circle, but everyone was safe. Johns helped her own cause with a shot to the short stop to load the bases and with two outs, Germain walked for the first run of the game.

In the fourth inning with two outs, Germain doubled to left and advanced to third on an error. Sophomore Amber Gonzales (Austin, Texas) singled to plate Germain, then promptly stole second. On the first pitch, catcher Juliana Cerda (San Antonio) singled, followed by a Nash single to right field to load the bases. Aldridge singled to score the second run of the inning and give the Rattlers a 3-1 advantage.

Two frames later, Germain again started things off – this time with a single to right. She then stole second base. Cerda reached on a fielding error by the short stop and freshman Jayme Johns got her first action of her career, pinch hitting, and singling up the middle to score Germain. Nash again reached base, doing so on a fielder's choice, Johns moved to third and Cerda scored. Nash stole second and Aldridge reached on a fielder's choice, knocking Taylor Armitage out of the game for the Rangers. In a double break for the next base, Nash continued to come home and was safe, while Aldridge faked and went back to first. The Rangers threw towards first, allowing Nash to steal home and give the Rattlers their sixth and final run of the game and the 6-0 lead.

The St. Mary's Softball Classic continues on Friday morning at 10 a.m. with New Mexico Highlands vs Eastern New Mexico on field one and Texas A&M-Kingsville vs Drury on field two. The Rattlers will face Texas A&M Commerce at approximately 4:45 p.m.
