Softball finishes opening tourney with another split

CONROE, Texas – The St. Mary's softball team split games on the final day of the Arkansas Tech Winter Invitational, dropping game one 5-2 to Washburn, before bouncing back to win in walkoff fashion, 4-3 against West Texas A&M.

With the split, the Rattlers are 2-3 on the year and will open the home portion of the 2019 season on Thursday with the beginning of the annual St. Mary's College Softball Classic against Regis at 4 p.m.

Freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin, Texas) went 3-for-4 over the doubleheader with three runs scored and four walks to pace the team and junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) was 3-for-7 with two RBIs, including the game winner against the Lady Buffs.

Game One Recap
The Rattlers scored their two runs on seven hits with five walks and only one strike out. They stranded seven runners, stole three bases and committed one error in the field. The Ichabods scored their five runs on 13 hits, walked once and struck out twice. They stranded 11 on base, stole two bags, had one hit by pitch and also committed one error.

Sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Aldridge went 1-for-1 with three base on balls and a run scored.
Junior Staci Johns (Elgin) pitched the first 5 2/3 innings for the Rattlers. She gave up five runs on 12 hits, walking one and striking out one, taking her second loss of the year. Sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin, Texas) was in the circle for the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit and she struck out one.

Washburn's leadoff hitter Samantha Stallbaumer went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, while Bri Francis was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Savannah Moore was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Raegan Moore was awarded the victory to move to 2-2 on the year after pitching 4 1/3 innings. She didn't allow any runs on four hits, walking three and didn't strike out a batter. The Ichabods used two pitchers in relief over the remaining 2 2/3 innings.
Washburn scored three runs in the top of the first. The Rattlers had base runners in each of the first five innings, but were unable to plate anyone. The Ichabods added two more runs on four hits in the sixth for the 5-0 advantage.

Carney walked, freshman Aracelli Sanchez (San Antonio) pinch ran for Carney, she stole second and she advanced to third on a ground out by McLennan. Germain singled to left to score Sanchez for the Rattlers first run of the game.

Aldridge led off the seventh with a single to left and moved to second on a wild pitch. Johns walked and freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin) pinch ran for her. Washburn went to the bull pen for the second time, bringing in Aubree Herrin. Carney singled to right field to score Aldridge, but Licon was thrown out at third to end the game 5-2.

Game Two Recap
St. Mary's scored four runs on seven hits and was aided by two West Texas A&M errors. There was also one out and two runners left on base when the game ended. The Lady Buffs scored three runs on five hits with one Rattler miscue.

Aldridge continued to have a good day for the Rattlers, going 2-for-3 in the nightcap with two runs scored and a walk. Germain was 2-for-4 with an RBI and senior Kristal Salinas (San Antonio) was 1-for-2 with a run scored, an RBI and two walks.

Junior Julia Cruz (Asherton, Texas) pitched the complete game for the Rattlers to improve to 2-1 on the year. She allowed two earned runs on five hits, walking two and striking out five in her second complete contest of the season.

The Lady Buffs were led by Kylee Moore who went 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI and a pinch runner scored a run in her place. In the circle, Kyra Lair pitched the first three innings, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and no strike outs. Shayne Starkey pitched the next three frames and also gave up one run on three hits with three walks and two strike outs. Kourtney Coveney, who took the loss to move to 0-2 on the year, pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up two runs on two hits with one walk.

St. Mary's scored one run in the first frame. With one out, Aldridge singled to left and scored on a Johns' double to left center.

In the fourth inning, Salinas led things off with a single to left field and she promptly stole second. On a full count, Germain singled to the short stop. Germain and Salinas both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Gonzales and Salinas scored when Camacho singled to short for the 2-0 lead.

West Texas A&M scored three runs on three hits in the top of the sixth to take the 3-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh, Aldridge kicked things off with a single to left field and Licon, who was pinch hitting for Johns, successfully sacrificed her to second. Carney walked and Christian pinch ran for her. The pair each moved up a base on a wild pitch and Aldridge scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Salinas to short stop to knot the score at 3-3. Germain knocked in the winning run with a single to left on a 1-1 count, plating Christian.
