HOUSTON, Texas – The St. Mary's baseball team ended the Houston Winter Invitational at Minute Maid Park on a high note, defeating Tarleton State 8-5 to go 2-1 in the first tournament of the year.

Senior right-handed pitcher Oscar Sepulveda (San Antonio) did a great job on the hill in his first start for the Rattlers in over two years. In five innings, he allowed just one run on two hits, walking two and striking out seven.

Junior Keaton Milford (New Braunfels, Texas) went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, while both seniors Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) and Donnie Perez (San Antonio) scored two runs and had an RBI each. Perez also drew three walks.

In relief of Sepulveda, junior Matt Merrill (San Antonio) pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits, striking out three and walking one, while freshman Connor Schmidt (Devine, Texas) threw the final 1 1/3 inning giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Tarleton State used five pitchers in the contest. Sid Payan threw the first 4 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on two hits, walking five and striking out three. Michael Pilato pitched the next 1 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walking one. Three other hurlers pitched the final two frames.

With one out in the first inning, Parrish doubled to centerfield and D. Perez walked on four straight pitches. Milford reached on a fielder's choice to second base and Perez advanced to second on a throwing error by the second baseman to load the bases. With two outs, Parrish scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the game.

In the second inning, junior Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) doubled to center to start things off for the Rattlers. Junior Ragan Forrest (Lorena, Texas) walked and both moved up 90 feet on a ground out by senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas). Junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) walked and Perez scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Parrish for the 2-0 lead.

Tarleton scored one run in the top of the sixth, but the Rattlers immediately answered in the bottom half of the frame, putting up three runs on two hits with one Texan error for the 5-1 advantage. Mueller got things going with a walk and he scampered to second on a wild pitch, however he was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice off the bat of Parrish. D. Perez also walked and forced Tarleton State to go to the bullpen. Milford singled through the right side to score Parrish and moved to third on the throwing error by the first baseman that plated Perez. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso) doubled down the left field line to score Milford for the third run of the inning.

Tarleton got three runs back in the top of the seventh on three hits to pull within one, 5-4, but the Rattlers again answered with one in the bottom of the inning when D. Perez homered to left field on a 1-0 count.

The Rattlers added two insurance runs in the eighth. Forrest led off with a walk and freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) pinch ran for him. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Vela. Mueller drew another walk and the Texans again went to the bullpen, bringing in Mitch Morris. Mueller immediately stole second base and Parrish walked. The pair advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch and D. Perez walked to load the bases. Milford reached on a fielder's choice to second base, scoring Mueller.
