VICTORIA, Texas – Five extra base hits helped lead to 14 runs for the St. Mary's baseball team as they won the first true road contest of the season 14-8 over Houston-Victoria to improve to 3-1 on the season.

The 14 runs came on 12 hits with two errors and 10 runs came in the first three frames for the Rattlers. Victoria scored eight runs on nine hits and was aided by one StMU miscue. In four of the six innings where the Rattlers scored, the inning began with at least one walk, as StMU drew 12 walks in the game and struck out just six times.

Junior Keaton Milford (New Braunfels, Texas) went 4-for-5 with seven RBIs and a run scored after hitting two triples and a home run in the game, while senior Donnie Perez (San Antonio) was 4-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Both leadoff hitter Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) and short stop Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) drew three walks and scored all three times.

The Rattlers used six pitchers in the game, starting junior Johnny Panatex (Pflugerville, Texas) for the first time this season. Junior Tyler Dick (San Antonio) pitched 2 1/3 innings and earned the victory (1-0) after not allowing a hit during his time on the mound. He walked one and struck out three, throwing 28 pitches.

The Jaguars (2-2) were led offensively by Joshua Fonseca who was 3-for-4 with six RBIs and two runs scored behind the strength of a grand slam and another homer. Chase Tamez was 2-for-5 and Corben Henry scored two runs.

UHV also used six hurlers on the night, starting with Andrew Loudermilk, who lasted just one inning. He gave up five earned runs – seven total – on four hits, walking four and striking out one and he took the loss.

Mueller walked to start the game and promptly stole second. Senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) also walked and D. Perez singled to left center to load the bases. Milford recorded the first of his seven RBIs by drawing a walk after an eight-pitch at bat. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso, Texas) reached on an error by the third baseman to score Parrish and Perez and give the Rattlers the early 3-0 lead. The Jaguars tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a pair of home runs.

Vela walked on four straight pitches to begin the second inning and Mueller was hit by a pitch. Parrish singled to second base to again load the bags for the Rattlers and D. Perez doubled to deep left field to plate two runs. Milford hit his first triple of the night to clear the bases and knock Loudermilk out of the game for UHV with StMU up 7-3. The Jaguars were held off the scoreboard in their half of the inning.

For the third straight inning, a Rattler walked to kick things off, this time junior Andrew Perez (El Paso). Vela and Mueller followed with four-pitch walks to load the bases for the third time and Parrish walked to plate Perez to put the Rattlers up five. The Jaguars again went to the bullpen and D. Perez grounded into a double play, but Vela scored. Milford tripled to deep right field and Mueller scored for the 10-3 lead. The Rattlers put freshman Matt Moran (San Antonio) in to pitch for Panatex and he held the Jaguars scoreless in the bottom of the third.

UHV scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth with four of the runs coming on the grand slam by Fonseca.

Vela walked to begin the inning for the second time in the game, and Mueller copied him. Parrish drew another walk on four straight pitches to knock another Jaguar pitcher out of the game. With two outs, Milford singled to right to score Vela for the 11-8 advantage.

There was no scoring until the top of the eighth when Hernandez led things off with a home run over the left field wall on a 1-0 count to make the score 12-8.

With two outs in the ninth, D. Perez singled past a diving short stop and freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) pinch ran for Perez. Milford hit a home run over the right field fence for two runs and the 14-8 final score.

The Rattlers open the home portion of their season on Friday against Tarleton State at 3 p.m. and then the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
