Men's Tennis edges UTPB, 5-2

ODESSA, Texas — St. Mary's Men's Tennis edged UTPB 5-2 on Friday, with four Rattlers sweeping their opponents in two sets in singles play.

The Rattlers kicked off the match strong with wins on the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles courts, securing the doubles point. Konakanchi/Gee started off with a win of 6-3 at the No. 3 position. No. 1 junior duo of Bojan Popovic/Jerimiah Gonzalez downed Fernando Siqueira/Jorge Garcia, 7-5, clinching the doubles point in a tight battle.

In singles action, the top four positions all swept their opponents in straight sets. At the No. 5 position, freshman Louis Bonnay fell in a three-set thriller against Juan Diego Ruiz 2-6, 6-2, 4-10.

"After starting the season off playing three very tough opponents and suffering very close losses, I had no doubt these guys had used those matches to lay a solid foundation for the season," head coach Lisa Dausin said. "They were tested, our flaws exposed, and they showed their determination and faith in one another to persevere. This weekend we began to see the fruits of their labor. Tough opponents and excellent performance. We are very proud indeed."

The Rattlers open the road portion of the season at Midwestern State at 1 p.m. on Feb. 28 in Wichita Falls, Texas.
