By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's baseball team earned a split in the four-game series against #2 West Texas A&M, defeating the Buffs 7-4 on Sunday to improve to 9-6 on the year.

St. Mary's scored seven runs on 10 runs with four West Texas A&M (13-3) errors, while the Buffs scored four runs on nine hits with no St. Mary's errors. Junior Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) went 2-for-4 with two runs, one RBI and a walk, while freshman Jake Mares (Fort Worth, Texas) was 2-for-2 with a walk. Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso, Texas) led the team with three RBIs, going 1-for-4 at the plate and junior Keaton Milford (New Braunfels, Texas) drew three walks.

Junior Mason Minister (San Antonio) picked up his first win of the year (1-0) in her fifth outing of the year. He pitched the final five innings of the game, allowing only three hits and he struck out three with no walks. Sophomore Jacob Koehler (New Braunfels) threw the first four innings, allowing four runs on six hits, walking three and striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED
For the fourth-straight game, West Texas A&M jumped on the scoreboard first, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. The Rattlers immediately answered with two in their half. Freshman Ryan McGowen (San Antonio) started things off with a double to right field. A. Perez grounded out to short stop but McGowen moved to third on the throw. Senior Donnie Perez (San Antonio) doubled to left for the RBI and the first Rattler run. Junior Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) came in to pinch run for D. Perez and advanced to third on the ground out by Milford. Hernandez reached on an error by the second baseman and Mueller scored for the 4-2 score.

The Rattlers added one run in the fourth when junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso) led off with a single up the middle. With one out, Fennell stole second base. Mares walked and McGowen reached on a fielder's choice that scored Fennell to pull StMU within one, 4-3.

Junior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) led off the sixth with a double to left center and sent the Buffs to the bullpen. Mares was successful in his sacrifice bunt to move Parrish to second base, McGowen walked and West Texas A&M once again went to the pen. A. Perez singled to third to score Parrish and the Rattlers pulled off a double steal with McGowen and A. Perez. Milford was intentionally walked to load the bases and Hernandez singled past the short stop to score two to give the Rattlers the first lead of the day, 6-4.

A. Perez walked to begin the eighth inning, Mueller sacrificed him to second, Milford walked and Perez moved to third on a Hernandez fly out to right. Senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) singled past the short stop to score another run to stretch the lead to 7-4, which ended up the final tally.
