Men's Basketball stumbles at UAFS

FORT SMITH, Ark. – The St. Mary's men's basketball team was never able to get a lead at UAFS, falling 81-55 on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) led the Rattlers (11-15, 3-11 Heartland Conference) with 16 points behind a perfect 7-for-7 night at the charity stripe. Junior Lamont Traylor (Las Vegas, Nevada) led the team with 10 rebounds. Senior Skyler Brooks (Seguin, Texas) led the team with two assists and seven different players on the team each had one steal.

UAFS (10-17, 4-11 Heartland) was led by Seth Hawley with 18 points, while David Ward and Chris Crawford each scored 12 and Tyler Williams added 11. Matt Morgan led the team with eight rebounds, while Williams and Hawley had four assists, Ward had four steals and Morgan had three blocked shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The teams traded layups to start the game, with junior forward Curtlon Wesley (Houston, Texas) scoring the one for the Rattlers. The clubs again exchanged layups, with junior Matej Gaspert (Zagreb, Croatia) scoring for StMU. The Lions scored the next eight for a 12-4 lead. Wesley scored on a traditional three-point play to close within five, 12-7, but UAFS went on a second 8-0 run to push the lead to 13, 20-7 with 12:12 left. Jordan snapped the streak with a layup, but UAFS responded with a pair of free throws. Senior forward Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) made one free throw and the team's traded three-pointers for the 25-13 score. Freshman Dylan Isenhower (Abilene, Texas) hit a jumper and Jordan scored on a traditional three-point play to close the Rattlers within seven, 25-18, with 7:56 left in the half. After four straight by the Lions, Jordan made a pair of free throws, senior Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio) added one and Isenhower scored a layup to cut the deficit to six, 29-23 with 4:03 remaining. After a UAFS jumper, Jordan made a pair of free throws and the teams traded baskets for the 33-27 tally. Two UAFS free throws, then junior Nikau McCullough (Hamilton, New Zealand) made one and the teams each made one layup to end the half with the 37-30 score.

UAFS scored the first seven points of the second half before Peterson sank a pair of free throws for a 12-point game, 44-32 with 15:57 left. After five more by the Lions, Wesley made a layup for the 49-34 tally. UAFS went on another 8-0 scoring run that was halted by a Wesley layup and followed up by a Radojicic layup. After four straight by the Lions, Gaspert scored again and the Lions hit a pair of free throws so the scoreboard read 62-40 with 9:16 to play. Brooks made his first basket of the contest and UAFS answered with five straight. Freshman Timmy Benavides (San Antonio) hit a three-pointer and the Lions responded with a layup. Jordan made a pair of free throws and Isenhower scored on a layup to cut it to a 20-point game, 69-49 with 6:18 to play. The Lions scored the next five, Traylor made one free throw, UAFS hit both free throws and Traylor again made one at the charity stripe for the 76-51 score. The Lions scored five straight and Isenhower and Radojicic ended the game on back-to-back layups for the 81-55 final score.

INDIVIDIUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • Freshman Caleb Jordan has now scored in double figures in 14 straight games and in 23 games this season.
  • Jordan also has at least one rebound in 19 straight games.
  • Senior Skyler Brooks has multiple assists in four straight games and has had at least one in each of the last six contests.
  • Senior Petar Radojicic has multiple rebounds in 25 of 26 games this season, including three today against UAFS.
  • Senior Dimitri Peterson has multiple points and multiple rebounds in each of the last five games. He has had multiple rebounds in all 26 games this season and has had five or more in 23 of the 26 contests.
TEAM NOTES
  • St. Mary's has out-rebounded eight of its last nine opponents and 21 of 26 this season.  The Rattlers are averaging 8.0 more rebounds a game than their opponents.
  • The four assists in the game is a season low, as was the 12.5 percent from the three-point line. The previous low in assists was six from Texas A&M-Kingsville, while the shooting percentage low was 15.4 against Western New Mexico.
  • The 25 points scored in the second half tonight tied for the lowest output this season, knotted from the first game against St. Edward's on Dec. 1, 2018.
