By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The final home game of the 2018-19 season didn't go the Rattlers way, as the St. Mary's men's basketball team fell to DBU 88-68 on Wednesday evening.

In his last game at Bill Greehey Arena, senior Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out of the game. He also tied for the team-high with three assists. Fellow seniors Skyler Brooks (Seguin, Texas) led the game with three blocked shots, while Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio) added another two blocks.

The Rattlers are now 11-16 on the season and 3-12 in Heartland Conference play and need a win at Texas A&M International on Saturday to make the final Heartland Conference Tournament in Tulsa. DBU improves to 21-8 on the year and 12-3 in league action.

StMU freshman Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) led the team with 16 points, while freshman Dylan Isenhower (Abilene, Texas) scored in double figures for the second time in his career with 12 points.

DBU was led by JT Harris with 13 points and 10 rebounds, Carter Brown with 15 points and four assists, Jonathyn Washington with 13 points and two steals and Jordan Manse with 10 points. Jalen White also had two blocked shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
DBU jumped out to a 9-1 lead before Brooks made the first field goal of the game for the Rattlers at the 16:21 mark. He made another to cut it to a 9-5 lead. The teams traded layups and the Patriots used a 7-0 run to build an 18-7 advantage. After another Brooks basket, DBU made its first three-pointer of the game and Jordan answered with a jumper. Brooks made one free throw and Jordan sank a pair to cut the lead to seven, 21-14 with 10:04 remaining. DBU scored on back-to-back baskets, but Brooks answered for his ninth point of the game. After five straight for the Patriots, junior Curtlon Wesley (Las Vegas, Nev.) made both of his free throw attempts to make the scoreboard read 30-18 with 7:35 left. DBU scored a basket and Radojicic punched home a pair from the charity stripe.  After another DBU jumper, Isenhower made his first triple of the night and the teams traded jumpers for an 11-point spread, 36-25 with 4:11 to play. Isenhower's second triple cut it to an 8-point game, but DBU answered with five straight to stretch the lead back to 13. Radojicic made one free throw and DBU scored the last five of the half for the 46-29 score.

Wesley made a free throw to begin the second half scoring and he hit a layup after a three-pointer by DBU. The Patriots scored the next seven but Jordan stopped the rally with a jumper in the paint. The teams traded baskets for the 58-36 tally. After five straight by the Patriots, Isenhower made a layup, DBU made a layup and Wesley hit a jumper and the score was 65-40. DBU scored a basket, and the Rattlers went on a 10-0 run – their longest of the game – to cut the deficit to 17, 67-50 with 7:29 to play. The Patriots answered with a seven-point run of their own – also the longest of the game – when junior Matej Gaspert (Zagreb, Croatia) stopped it with a pair of free throws and Isenhower followed with a layup for a 20-point spread, 74-54. DBU scored one basket, Jordan sank two more free throws and the teams traded baskets. After a DBU three-pointer, Jordan made one free throw and Radojicic made a layup to keep the gap at 20, 81-61 with 2:28 remaining. Jordan went to the line for two more, DBU scored on one free throw and Jordan sank a triple for the 82-66 spread, but DBU sank back-to-back three's late in the shot clock to end any chance of a comeback rally. Peterson scored the last two points of the game at the charity stripe for the 88-68 final.

INDIVIDUAL PLAYER NOTES
  • The double-double for Petar Radojicic of 11 points and 10 rebounds was the first this season for the senior. He had two a season ago, for three in his career with the Blue & Gold so far. Radojicic is the fifth different player on the team to record a double-double this year (Skyler Brooks, Markques Houston, Dimitri Peterson {2}, Curtlon Wesley)
  • Freshman Caleb Jordan has either led the team or tied for the team lead in scoring 12 times this season. His 16 points tonight is the 15th straight game he's scored in double figures and the 24th time in 27 games this season he's topped 10 points.
  • Skyler Brooks recorded a season-best three blocked shots tonight in his final game inside Bill Greehey Arena. Four other times this year he's blocked two shots in a game.
  • Freshman Dylan Isenhower was one off his career high in both scoring and rebounding with 12 points and seven boards. He scored a career-best 13 against UAFS on Jan. 26, 2019 and had eight rebounds at Lubbock Christian on Feb. 7, 2019.
  • Lamont Traylor has had at least five rebounds in each of the last three games and has now had five or more seven times this year.
TEAM NOTES
  • St. Mary's recorded a season-high six blocked shots tonight. The previous high was five, done twice before.
  • The Rattlers out-rebounded DBU 43-to-32. It is the 12th opponent St. Mary's has out-rebounded by 10 or more this season.
  • Tonight marked the seventh time this year St. Mary's has scored 20 or more points at the free throw line. The Rattlers were 21-for-32 (65.6%).
  • A win over Texas A&M International on Saturday would give the Rattlers the eighth and final seed to the last Heartland Conference Tournament in Tulsa. Both schools are tied at 3-12 in the league standings. Earlier this season, the Rattlers won 57-54 at home.
