Baseball falters to #2 West Texas A&M in first game of four-game series

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – Despite the middle of the lineup all getting hits, the St. Mary's baseball team couldn't string them together against the second-ranked West Texas A&M Buffs, falling 10-3 in the first of a four-game series.

The Rattlers (7-5), scored three runs on eight hits and were aided by three Buff errors, while West Texas A&M (12-1) scored 10 runs on 14 hits with three StMU miscues. The Rattlers defense also turned two double plays in the game.

Senior Donnie Perez (San Antonio) recorded three of the team's eight hits, including a pair of singles and home run and he had both of the club's RBIs.

Senior Zach De La Garza (3-1) was handed his first loss of the year after allowing three earned runs (five total) on six hits over five innings. The San Antonio native walked four and struck out five. Junior Johnny Panatex (Pflugerville, Texas) pitched the next 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits with no walks and no strikeouts. Junior Levi Hon (Wylie, Texas) threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up four runs on three hits with two walks and junior Matt Merrill (San Antonio) pitched the final 2/3 of a frame, retiring the only two batters he faced.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Buffs broke on the scoreboard first with one run in the top of the second, but the Rattlers immediately responded with one of their own in their half. Junior Andrew Perez (El Paso) reached via an error by the third baseman and moved to second on a bunt single by junior Mitchell Caskey (Houston, Texas). Junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso) tried to move everyone up with a sacrifice bunt, but he was safe at first due to an error by the first baseman, which loaded the bases. Junior Patrick Fennell (El Paso) was hit by a pitch to knot the score at 1-1. The Rattlers were unable to push any more runs across, leaving the bases loaded.

West Texas A&M scored four in the fourth for the 5-1 advantage. StMU got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth frame. Senior catcher Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) led off the inning with a double to left field and Perez homered over the right field fence to close within two 5-3.
The Buffs scored one in the seventh and four in the ninth for the 10-3 final tally.
