Softball wins final three of Cactus Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. – The St. Mary's softball team finished the Cactus Classic on a high note, defeating Fort  Lewis 11-3 on Saturday evening and winning a doubleheader on Sunday, first over Saint Martin's 4-1 and then a thrilling 10-3 extra innings affair against Simon Fraser in the tournament conclusion.
The Rattlers (8-5) went 4-1 at Lincoln Park over the weekend and the team hit a solid .308 for the tournament with 15 extra base hits. The club also had a 2.80 ERA, compared to 5.86 for its opponents.

In the three games, the Blue & Gold hit .322 with 10 extra base hits and junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) had four of those – three doubles and a home run. She knocked in eight runs on six hits and drew two walks – one intentional – for a .545 batting average over the three contests. In the circle, Johns was 2-0 with one complete game. She pitched 12 innings, allowing just one earned run (two total) on nine hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out eight for an ERA of 0.58.

Freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin) went 4-for-9 with a triple, two RBIs, six runs scored and four walks, while fellow freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) was 4-for-10 with three runs scored, a triple, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) scored five runs, stole two bases and had three RBIs, as did fellow senior Kristal Salinas (San Antonio).

The Rattlers host Angelo State in a doubleheader on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and begin Heartland Conference play on Thursday, hosting Oklahoma Christian for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.

Game One Recap (St. Mary's 11, Fort Lewis 3)
The Rattlers scored one run in each of the first three innings and then exploded for eight over the final three frames for the 11-3 win. Sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin, Texas) got the starting nod in the circle for St. Mary's and pitched six innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits, walking one and striking out two to get her first win of the year (1-0). Freshman Rylee Hopper (New Braunfels, Texas) pitched the final inning in shutout fashion, striking out two of the three batters she faced.

The Johns' sisters combined for half of the team's hits in the contest, as Staci went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored, while freshman Jayme was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Christian also went 2-for-3 with two runs plated and junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) had an RBI and a run scored after drawing three walks in the game.

St. Mary's scored its 11 runs on 10 hits with two Skyhawks errors, while Fort Lewis (5-7) scored three runs on 11 hits with no Rattlers miscues.
Nash started the game with a walk, moved to second on a foul out by Aldridge and advanced to third on a ground out by S. Johns. J. Johns singled to left to plate Nash for the early 1-0 lead.

Germain began the second inning in the same vein, with a walk and she moved to scampered to second on a passed ball. With one out, Germain advanced to third when freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin) hit a ground ball back to the pitcher. Christian walked to put runners at the corners and Germain scored on a throwing error by the catcher on a pickoff attempt.

The third frame started the same as the first two, with a walk to the leadoff batter, this time to Aldridge. Aldridge stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. S. Johns doubled to right field for the 3-0 lead.

The Skyhawks got one run back in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff home run to centerfield by Angelique Elemen for the 3-1 tally, but the Rattlers immediately answered in the top of the fifth. With one out, Aldridge singled to center and S. Johns followed with a double to center to plate Aldridge to make the score 4-1.

Sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso, Texas) pinch hit in the sixth and led off with a single to left field. Christian hit a bunt single and Nash moved them both up a base with a ground out to first. Aldridge drew a walk to load the bases. With two outs, J. Johns singled to the pitcher to plate Moreno. Salinas walked to score Christian, Germain walked to score Aldridge and the Skyhawks went to the bullpen to bring in Dana Dwyer for starter Kelly Decker. Hopper walked to bring home Johns for the fourth run of the inning and give the Rattlers an 8-1 lead.

In the seventh, Christian tripled to right and scored on a Nash single to third base. With one out, S. Johns hit a home run to left for three more runs and the 11-1 advantage. The Skyhawks got two back in the bottom of the seventh, but Hopper came in to put an end to the rally and secure the Rattlers victory at 11-3.

Game Two Recap (St. Mary's 4, Saint Martin's 1)
St. Mary's jumped out to the early lead in the first game on Sunday, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and adding two in the fifth for the 4-1 victory over Saint Martin's (4-5).

S. Johns went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Aldridge was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and the other RBI. Nash and Licon scored the other two runs, while J. Johns, Licon and Christian each tallied a hit.

S. Johns pitched the complete game to improve to 4-2 on the year. She allowed one run on five hits and struck out seven.

Nash walked to begin the contest and swiped second base. Aldridge followed with a base on balls and S. Johns doubled to plate both of them for the early 2-0 advantage.

The Saints scored one in the top of the second to cut the Rattlers lead in half and the score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth.

Licon, pinch hitting again for Moreno, doubled to begin the fifth frame. She moved to third on a ground out by Christian. Nash reached on an error by the pitcher, but was thrown out attempting to steal second. Aldridge singled, plating Licon. Aldridge scampered to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by S. Johns for the 4-1 final score.

Game Three Recap (St. Mary's 10, Simon Fraser 3)
The teams were tied at 2-2 headed into the top of the eighth, but St. Mary's exploded for eight runs on five hits in the final frame to lift them to victory over the Canadian club.

Germain was 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Aldridge and Salinas were both 2-for-4. Aldridge had a run scored and an RBI, while Salinas had two RBIs. Moreno was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and Amber Gonzales (Austin) scored twice. Nash also had two runs scored and two RBIs as the Rattlers scored 10 runs on 13 hits with two SFU errors. The Clan (5-1) scored three runs on eight hits with four StMU errors.

McLennan pitched the first three innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts in a no decision. S. Johns threw the final five innings to improve to 5-2 on the year. She gave up one run on five hits with one strike out.

Simon Fraser scored first, plating two in the second. The Rattlers cut the deficit in half with one in the third. Moreno led off with a double to centerfield. Camacho used a sacrifice bunt to move Moreno to third and with two outs, Aldridge tripled down the right field line for the 2-1 score.
In the fifth, the Rattlers took advantage of a Clan error to knot the score at 2-2. With one out, Nash reached first on a miscue by the second baseman. Nash stole second base and scored when S. Johns singled to right field.

The teams used the international scoring and placed Gonzales on second base to begin the eighth inning. Sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso) moved her to third with a sacrifice bunt and with two outs, Christian singled through the right side to break the tie. Moreno doubled to center and the Clan made a move to the bullpen, bringing in Kendra Ho. Camacho was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Nash made them pay, doubling to centerfield to score two runs. Aldridge walked and S. Johns was intentionally walked, plating Camacho. Gonzales walked on four pitches and Salinas singled to right field to score another run and force SFU to go to the bullpen one more time, bringing in Anissa Zacharczuk. Germain singled to second base for the Rattlers eighth run of the inning and the 10-2 lead.

The Clan placed a runner on second and she scored unearned after an error, but the Rattlers were able to turn a double play and get a ground out to end the game with just one run scored for the 10-3 final.
