Softball splits with top-ranked Angelo State

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – Facing a team that has made the College World Series each of the last two years and holds the top-ranking in the nation is no easy task, but the St. Mary's softball team made the most of it, splitting a doubleheader against the Angelo State Rambelles, winning game one 2-1, before dropping game two 6-1.

The Rattlers (9-6) have now played seven of their 15 games against nationally-ranked opponents and are 3-4 in those games, and are 6-2 against teams not in the NFCA Coaches Poll. With the split, Angelo State is 13-2 on the season.

The last time St. Mary's softball beat the top-ranked team in the country was Feb. 8, 2015 when the Rattlers defeated #1 West Texas A&M, 7-1. This also marks the second time this year a Rattlers women's team has defeated a #1 team in the country as the women's basketball team beat top-ranked Central Missouri on November 23, 2018.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) continued to have a stellar season, going 3-for-4 in the two games with one run scored, one RBI, two walks and a complete game win in game one in the circle, while junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) was 3-for-5 with one run, one RBI and one walk. Senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) also had three hits, going 3-for-7 with the other run scored and sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) recorded the team's third RBI of the day.

St. Mary's held the potent Angelo State offense well below its normal output, as the Rambelles entered Wednesday ranked fourth in the nation, averaging 9.46 runs per game.

The Rattlers open their final season of Heartland Conference play against Oklahoma Christian on Thursday. The game times have been moved up one hour and now will begin at 4 and approximately 6:30 p.m. due to the threat of overnight storms in the area.

GAME ONE RECAP (St. Mary's 2, #1 Angelo State 1)
Johns won her sixth consecutive outing, pitching a complete game, three-hit one-run contest. Johns walked one and struck out two against the top-ranked team in the nation, bringing her strikeout total to 40 in 55 2/3 innings.

Johns also had one of the team's two RBIs in the game, and went 2-for-3 at the plate, as did Germain and Nash. Carney had the club's other RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Nash led off the third with a double to straightaway center and moved to third on a groundout to second by freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin). Johns hit a zinger over the second baseman's head to plate Nash and give the Rattlers the 1-0 lead.

Germain led off the fourth with a triple down the right field line and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Carney, when she hit a followed Germain with a shot to right field for the 2-0 advantage.

In the top of the seventh, the Rambelles scored one run on two hits to cut the lead in half, but they stranded a runner on third when Johns got a fly out to centerfield to end the contest.

GAME TWO RECAP (#1 Angelo State 6, St. Mary's 1)
Both teams recorded five hits in the second game, however the Rattlers stranded seven runners on base throughout the game, while the Rambelles stranded two as they came back to win 6-1 in the nightcap.

All five of the Rattlers' hits were singles, while four of the five Rams hits were for extra bases, including two doubles by Courtney Barnhill and two home runs. ASU also had four stolen bases in the second game.

The five singles for the Rattlers were all by different players, while Johns scored the lone run and Germain tallied the RBI. Johns also recorded a pair of walks, while Germain had one and Aldridge drew the other.

Sophomore Alex McLennan (1-1) pitched 5.0 innings in the loss, allowing five runs on four hits. She walked two and struck out a season-high seven batters.

Angelo State scored one run in the third inning and four runs on a grand slam off the bat of Karina Rocha in the sixth for the 5-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth with one out, S. Johns hit a bloop single to right and freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio) followed with a single down the left field line. Senior Kristal Salinas (San Antonio) hit a hot shot to the short stop to load the bases and Germain singled to left centerfield to plate Johns for the Rattlers first run of the game. After Carney hit a foul ball over the left field fence, Angelo State went to the bull pen and Victoria Vasquez was able to retire the side and leave the bases loaded full of Rattlers.

The Rambelles got the run back in the top of the seventh for the 6-1 final score.
