Softball wins in dramatic fashion over #21 Colorado Mesa

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

TUCSON, Ariz. – Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) helped her own cause, getting a three-run double in the sixth inning to tie the score and the St. Mary's softball team scored two more in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the #21 Colorado Mesa Mavericks during the second day of the Cactus Classic, 5-4.

The victory evens the Rattlers season record at 5-5, while the Mavs fall to 6-3 on the young season.

St. Mary's scored its five runs on six hits with one CMU error, while the Mavs scored four runs on five hits with two StMU errors. All 11 hits in the game were spread out amongst 11 different players, as were the nine runs.

Johns pitched the entire game for the Rattlers to improve to 3-2 on the season. She allowed two earned runs on five hits, walking only one and striking out seven.

Colorado Mesa scored one run in the fourth and two in the fifth for the 3-0 advantage. With one out in the sixth, freshman Aracelli Sanchez (San Antonio), singled to third base with a bunt in a pinch hitting role. She moved to second on a walk by fellow freshman Bari Christian (San Antonio). Senior Raynelle Nash made it to first on a fielder's choice that erased Sanchez from the base paths. Freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin) singled back to the pitcher to load the bases and Johns hit her bases clearing double to centerfield for three runs.

The Mavs got one run back in the top of the seventh on one hit and one error for the 4-3 lead. With one out, junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) drew a four-pitch walk and freshman Jayme Johns (Elgin) bunted a single to third. Freshman Tiffany Licon (Austin, Texas) pinch hit and reached via the error, which scored Germain and knotted the score at 4-4. Christian hit a deep sacrifice fly to left field to plate Johns for the win. There were two outs and one runner on base when the game ended.

The Rattlers also faced Fort Lewis in the tournament and those results will be posted as soon as they become available.
