Baseball drops doubleheader

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's baseball team never found its rhythm on Saturday, dropping both games of the twinbill to Texas A&M-Kingsville, 10-7 in seven innings and 6-3 in nine innings to move to 7-4 on the season.

The Rattlers also committed an uncharacteristic five errors in the doubleheader, with four coming in the first game, where the Javelinas scored 10 runs on seven hits. StMU scored its seven runs on eight hits and was aided by one TAMUK miscue. In the second game, the Javelinas scored six runs on 11 hits with one error, while the Rattlers scored three runs on seven hits with one miscue.

Over the two games, nine of the 15 hits for the Rattlers were doubles. Both junior Keaton Milford (New Braunfels, Texas) and junior Mitchell Caskey (Houston, Texas) hit two doubles each, while junior Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. He also walked once and was hit by a pitch.

The Rattlers remain at home for a four-game set against West Texas A&M beginning on Friday at 4 p.m. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday slated to start at 1 p.m. and conclude the series on Sunday at noon.

Game One Recap
Milford went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while junior Ragan Forrest (Lorena, Texas) was 2-for-3 with one RBI and senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI to highlight the offense for the Rattlers.

Senior Oscar Sepulveda (San Antonio) suffered his first loss of the season (2-1) after giving up seven runs on six hits with one walk and three strike outs in two innings of work. Junior Mason Minister (San Antonio) worked the next 1 2/3 innings, giving up one earned run after walking three and fanning one. Junior Matt Merrill (San Antonio) pitched for 2 2/3 frames, allowing one run on one hit with two walks and three strikeouts and junior Johnny Panatex (Pflugerville, Texas) continued to have a strong season, retiring both batters he faced. In his last three outings (3 innings of work), Panatex has given up just one hit and struck out five.

Texas A&M-Kingsville jumped out to the early lead, scoring five runs in the second inning and added two in the third for the 7-0 advantage. The Rattlers scored three in the bottom of the third, but the Javelinas immediately answered with two more in the fourth for the 9-3 lead. StMU plated three more in the fourth to cut the deficit in half, 9-6 and each team scored one run in the seventh inning for the 10-7 final tally.

Game Two Recap
Andrew Perez went 2-for-2 with a run scored in the night cap, while junior Johnny Hernandez (El Paso) recorded two of the team's three RBIs in the game and senior Donnie Perez (San Antonio) had the other.

Senior Branson Hall (Lubbock, Texas) fell to 1-2 on the year after a rough start on the hill, giving up six runs on nine hits with a strikeout in just 1 2/3 innings pitched. Freshman Connor Schmidt (Devine, Texas) came out of the bullpen and did a great job, pitching the final 7 1/3 innings, giving up just two hits, walking two and striking out five. This was Schmidt's fourth appearance of the year – and the longest. He has given up just one run in those four appearances – and none since his first, pitching 9 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings.

Once again, the Javelinas jumped on the scoreboard early, posting all six of their runs in the first two innings. The Rattlers scored one in the third and added two in the sixth, but were unable to get another rally going to erase the deficit.
