Rally falls short for Softball

TUCSON, Ariz. – In the first game of the Cactus Classic, the St. Mary's softball team rallied in the late innings, but couldn't overcome a six run deficit, falling 6-4 to Biola on Friday afternoon.

Biola (1-2) scored five runs in the second and one in the third for the early lead, before the Rattlers (4-5) battled back to score two runs in the fifth and two in the seventh on nine hits. Both teams drew two walks in the game and the Rattlers committed one error.

Senior Raynelle Nash – the Rattlers' leadoff hitter – paced the team going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI. The San Antonio native also led the team with five assists in the field from third base. Junior Staci Johns (Elgin, Texas) also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs after blasting a double in the seventh inning. Four of the nine Rattlers hits were for extra bases as the squad had three doubles and a triple in contest.

Junior Julia Cruz (Asherton, Texas) started in the circle, pitching two innings. She allowed five runs on four hits, walking one and striking out three. She is now 2-3 on the year. Sophomore Alex McLennan (Austin) threw the final four frames, giving up just one run on three hits, walking one and also fanning three.

Biola's Jennifer Morinishi pitched the complete game, allowing four runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out seven to move to 1-0 on the year. Offensively, Aric Gonzales went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI, while Kylie Velasco knocked in two runs.

Trailing 6-0 and with two outs in the fifth senior Angie Camacho (New Braunfels, Texas) singled to left field. Nash tripled to plate Camacho for the Rattlers first run of the game. Freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin, Texas) followed with a double to right for the 6-2 score.

In the top of the seventh, the Rattlers again did their damage with two outs. Nash singled, Aldridge drew a walk and Licon doubled to score both Nash and Aldridge for the 6-4 tally, but unfortunately they were unable to keep the rally going.

Saturday the Rattlers face a pair of teams from Colorado in 21st-ranked Colorado Mesa at 3 p.m. and Fort Lewis at 5:30 p.m.
