Men's Hoops comeback falls short

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – The St. Mary's men's basketball team did a great job of limiting second chances, holding Newman to just five offensive rebounds and only two second chance points, but the Jets made their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 75-64 victory on Thursday evening.

Freshman guard Caleb Jordan (Midlothian, Texas) led the Rattlers (10-13, 2-9 Heartland Conference) with 22 points, while senior forward Petar Radojicic (Ljubovija, Serbia) scored 14 and had seven rebounds, to tie for team-high honors with junior Curtlon Wesley (Houston, Texas) and senior Dimitri Peterson (San Antonio). Freshman Timmy Benavides (San Antonio) led the team with four assists, and he and Peterson each had two steals.

Newman's (17-7, 8-4 Heartland) Juwan Davenport also scored 22 points, while Dametrius Walker added 18 points and Ben Ayre chipped in 10 and five assists. Marshawn Blackmon had a game-high 10 rebounds and Walker led the Jets with three steals.

Freshman Dylan Isenhower (Abilene, Texas) made a layup, but the Jets scored the next five to stretch their lead to seven, 29-22. Brooks made a layup and the Jets answered with a triple for the 32-24 score with 5:13 left. The teams traded buckets and the Rattlers used a mini 5-0 run to pull within three, 34-31.
