Rattlers hang on to beat OC on Reunion Weekend

St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO — The young Rattlers held strong in crunch time Saturday, delivering St. Mary's Men's Basketball a 74-69 victory over Oklahoma Christian on Senior Day at Bill Greehey Arena.

Matej Gaspert led the Snakes with 14 points off the bench, while senior Dimitri Peterson shined with 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting to go along with eight rebounds before about 400 fans.

The Rattlers of today were cheered on by Rattler greats from yesterday, as the program held a Reunion Weekend in celebrating the 30th anniversary of the 1989 team that won the NAIA national championship.

St. Mary's (11-13) led by as many as 13 in the first half, as a pair of Lamont Traylor free throws put the Rattlers up 27-14 about midway through the period. The Eagles cut it down to five in the latter stages of the frame, but a late surge saw St. Mary's take a 39-30 lead into the second half.

Still, OC wouldn't go away.

The Eagles sliced the lead to a single point on three separate occasions in the second half, making the Rattlers sweat out another tight battle at home. But Caleb Jordan stopped the bleeding with a jumper that put the Rattlers up 65-62 with 4:58 remaining.

Timmy Benavides followed with a clutch 3-pointer — his third of the game — to give the Rattlers a six-point cushion with just over four minutes left. Two Gaspert free throws pushed the lead to eight with two minutes remaining.

With the Rattler defense holding tight, the Eagles went scoreless for nearly four minutes, not finding the bottom of the net until the final minute of the game.

St. Mary's will hit the road next week for a pair of Heartland Conference contests, starting Thursday at Rogers State in Claremore, Oklahoma.

GAME NOTES: Peterson is just short of several historical career marks, as the senior from San Antonio needs just two more points to hit 500 for his career, three more rebounds for 500 and seven more assists for 100 in his career.
