Baseball wins game one from Javelinas

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletics Communications

SAN ANTONIO – Solid pitching and timely hitting will lead to wins more often than not and that's exactly what the St. Mary's baseball team got in the first game of a three-game series against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday afternoon in an 8-4 victory at Dickson Stadium.

Junior Zach De La Garza (San Antonio) pitched seven innings, allowing just two runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out a season-high 10 – just one off his career-high of 11 – to improve to 3-0 on the year. Junior Levi Hon (Wylie, Texas) pitched the final two frames and picked up his third save of the season after giving up two runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out three.

Senior Donnie Perez (San Antonio) hit his second home run in as many games, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Senior Colton Parrish (La Vernia, Texas) also had a pair of hits, going 2-for-5 with a run scored, while leadoff hitter Derek Mueller (Carrolton, Texas) drew another two walks and scored two runs. Senior Mario Vela (Mission, Texas) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Rattlers (7-2) scored their eight runs on eight hits and were aided by one Javelina (3-4) error, while Kingsville scored four runs on 14 hits with no StMU miscues. The two teams return to the field tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

The Javelinas scored two runs in the second inning for the early lead. In the third with two outs, Vela doubled past the short stop and Mueller reached on an error by the second baseman to plate Vela for the 2-1 score.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Rattlers scored three to take a 4-2 lead all with two outs. Mueller drew a walk and promptly stole second. Parrish singled through the right side to put runners on the corners and Perez hit his fourth home run of the year to score three.

Texas A&M-Kingsville got one run back in the top of the eighth, but the Rattlers immediately answered with four runs of their own for the 8-3 tally. Junior Andrew Perez (El Paso, Texas) singled up the middle to begin the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch. Perez advanced to third on a ground out off the bat of junior Tyler Dick (San Antonio). Junior Mitchell Caskey (Houston, Texas) doubled to center to score Perez, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Vela singled past the short stop to plate Caskey and advanced all the way to third on a pair of wild pitches. Mueller walked and Vela scored on a wild pitch. Mueller stole second base. D. Perez struck out but reached first base on a passed ball which allowed Mueller to scamper home.

The Javelinas plated one run in the top of the ninth for the 8-4 final score.
