Softball shuts out Mines

By Heather Kennedy | St. Mary's Athletic Communications

SAN ANTONIO – St. Mary's softball bookended a pair of four-run innings at the beginning and end of the game against Colorado School of Mines on Saturday afternoon to shut out the Orediggers 8-0 in the St. Mary's College Softball Classic.

The Rattlers (4-4) scored four in the first inning and then four in the sixth for their first shutout victory of the season.

Sophomore Abigale Carney (El Paso, Texas) hit the game-winning shot, a double to left center that scored both senior Raynelle Nash (San Antonio) and freshman Victoria Aldridge (Elgin, Texas). Carney was 2-for-4 in the game with three RBIs and a run scored. Aldridge was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while junior Taylor Germain (San Antonio) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Junior Staci Johns (Elgin) pitched a complete game in the circle for the Rattlers. She moves to 2-2 on the season after giving up just two hits on the evening. Johns walked just one Oredigger and struck out two in her second complete-game victory of the tournament.

With one out in the first, Aldridge bunted for a single and moved to second on a Johns single to centerfield. Carney doubled up the middle to score Aldridge and senior Kristal Salinas (San Antonio) singled past the short stop to score Angie Camacho (New Braunfels, Texas), who was running for Johns. That knocked the Mines starting pitcher out of the game and brought in Stringfellow, Salinas stole second base off her almost immediately and Germain doubled down the left field line to score two more runs for the early 4-0 lead.

There was no scoring until the bottom of the sixth when Amber Gonzales (Austin, Texas) led off with a walk. Sophomore Alex Moreno (El Paso, Texas) reached base on an error by the first baseman when she tried to field Moreno's bunt. With one out, Nash walked to load the bases and Aldridge singled past the short stop to score a pair of runs. Mines again changed pitchers, going to the bullpen for K. Redding. After she got Johns out, Carney blasted the game winner.

St. Mary's will conclude the tournament tomorrow with a contest against #14 Tarleton State at approximately 4:45 p.m., weather permitting. Please stay tuned to Rattlerathletics.com for up-to-date information regarding the status of the games.
