Volleyball Ends Home Season With Loss To 17th-Ranked Belles

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

SAN ANTONIO – In the final home match of the 2019 season, the St. Mary's Volleyball team was swept by the 17th-ranked Angelo State Rambelles 14-25, 12-25, 21-25 at Paul Taylor Fieldhouse.

Both senior KK Payne (New Braunfels, Texas) and sophomore Jasmine Sims (Graham, Texas) led the Rattlers (9-16, 3-13 Lone Star Conference) with seven kills each, while Payne had all three of the team's service aces. Junior libero Catherine Cruz (San Antonio) tied for match-high honors with 13 digs. Sophomore Julia Deais (San Antonio) led the team with two blocks, giving her over 50 blocks for the season.

The win by Angelo State is the fourth straight for the Belles, who improve to 23-2 on the year and 15-1 in the Lone Star. They are tied for the lead league with UAFS with identical 15-1 marks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Angelo State took an early 3-1 lead in the first set, but a kill by sophomore Alissa Tolbert (San Antonio) and one of Payne's aces knotted the score at 3-3. Tied at 4-4, the Belles took a 7-4 advantage before back-to-back kills by Sims pulled the Rattlers within one, 7-6. A seven point run a few rallies later by the Belles gave them a 15-7 lead and they went on to win the set, 25-14.

The Belles jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the second set behind the strong serving of setter Lindsey Ledyard and the Rattlers were never able to string together any runs, falling 25-12.

The third set was a back-and-forth battle between the clubs with 13 ties and eight lead changes. There were ties at each of the first four points, before freshman Shea Slusser (Denton, Texas) got a kill and Deais had a solo block to give the Rattlers a two-point edge, 6-4. The Belles promptly tied it again at 6, 7 and 8, before they took a two-point lead. StMU fought back to tie things at 11 and 12 before posting a two-point edge after Payne served an ace and Slusser notched another kill for the 14-12 lead. ASU scored two for the 14-14 tie and the Rattlers regained the lead, which they held until the 17-17 tie. After ties at 18 and 19, ASU gained the lead and momentum with back-to-back points and they scored four of the final six points with the other two coming at the hands of Payne for the 25-21 tally.
