Volleyball Falters In Four

By Heather Kennedy | RattlerAthletics.com

KINGSVILLE, Texas – In the third meeting of the season between St. Mary's and Texas A&M Kingsville Volleyball, the Javelinas defeated the Rattlers in four sets, 14-25, 25-23, 17-25, 15-25 to win the season series 2-1.

Junior Savannah Alcazar (League City, Texas) led the Rattlers (9-17, 3-14 Lone Star Conference) with nine kills despite playing in only three of the four sets, while senior KK Payne (New Braunfels, Texas) added eight kills and a team-high and career-high tying 16 digs. Payne also led the team with a match-high tying three aces. Junior Lindsey Kaufman (Coral Springs, Florida) posted her second double-double of the year with 30 assists and a career-high 12 digs. Both Alcazar and sophomore Julia Deais (San Antonio) had two blocks each to pace the Rattlers. San Antonio natives Alissa Tolbert and Catherine Cruz joined Payne and Kaufman in double figures in digs with 14 and 13, respectively.

St. Mary's recorded eight aces and just three errors on the night, marking the 13th time this year the team had as many or more aces than errors and the fourth time in the last five matches. The Rattlers hit only .054 for the match, but they did record 64 digs, the third-highest total in a four-set match this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Kingsville jumped out to the early 4-1 lead in the first set and never trailed, winning the opening set 25-14.

The second set was a much more back-and-forth affair. The score was tied at 1-1 and 2-2 before the Javelinas took a 5-2 lead. Trailing 8-4, Payne recorded a kill and Kaufman stepped back to the service line where she served a pair of aces in a stretch to bring the Rattlers back within one, 9-8. The Javelinas answered with two straight, but Payne then rattled off a five-point run at the service line, including an ace serve that bounced off the top of the tape for the 13-11 lead. One kill closed Kingsville within one, but Alcazar recorded a kill and then teamed with Deais on a block to push the Rattlers lead to three, 15-12. The Javelinas came back to knot the score at 16-16 and took a 21-17 lead behind the strength of three blocks, but after a St. Mary's timeout, Deais recorded a kill and then had back-to-back service aces to spark a 5-0 run for the Rattlers and give them the lead back, 22-21. Knotted at 23-23 Sims and Tolbert recorded consecutive kills to give the Rattlers the set victory, 25-23.

In a similar fashion to the first set, the Javelinas jumped out to the early 4-1 lead and never trailed, winning by the score of 25-17.

After a 1-1 tie to begin the fourth set, the Rattlers scored three straight for the 4-1 advantage. Alcazar had three kills and Sims posted an ace during the run. The Javelinas battled back to knot the score at 5-5 and after a 6-6 tie, back-to-back aces by Kingsville gave them the 8-6 lead, which they never relinquished and went on to win 25-15.
